This is a great opportunity for scouts, families, seniors, and individuals. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
MILK JUG GREENHOUSES
Sat., Jan 25, 2025, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
We will sow native seeds in upcycled milk jugs that we will turn into greenhouses. All supplies will be provided. We will have enough empty, clean milk jugs for each registrant to make one greenhouse but if you have extras, feel free to bring them and you will be welcome to use any leftover soil and seeds that we have. You may take home your greenhouses or choose to leave them with us to be planted in the parks in spring.
GARDENING FOR BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES, AND BEES
Sat., Feb 22, 2025, 10:00 am – 11:30 am
Based on the research of Doug Tallamy, we will learn why native plants are the best option for sustaining our local wildlife. There will be a special focus on easy-to-grow plants that thrive in southwest Ohio and provide excellent habitat for birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Free seeds will be included!
INTRO TO COMMUNITY SCIENCE PROJECTS
Sat., Mar 22, 2025, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Community Science (also known as Citizen Science or Participatory Science) allows people of all backgrounds and ages to contribute to scientific discovery. By using crowd-sourcing strategies, professional scientists compile and analyze data submitted from around the world to identify patterns and trends. Programs we may touch upon could include iNaturalist, eBird, Project Feeder Watch, MonarchWatch.org, Project Bud Burst, ODNR’s Stream Quality Monitoring, and more! If you have one you are particularly interested in learning about, drop us a note so we can include it! Some of these programs have phone apps that help users report data. Feel free to install them ahead of time if you would like. If you don’t have a smart phone, no problem!
