Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” are a category of chemicals used since the 1940s in many ubiquitous products such as nonstick cookware, stain resistant clothing and firefighting foam. The compounds are called “forever chemicals” because they degrade very slowly and accumulate over time both in the environment and in people.
Now, communities throughout the United States and Ohio are at risk from exposure to these forever chemicals. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that up to ten percent of the nation’s public drinking water systems may have levels of PFAS contamination that exceed new federal standards. For example, one of the two Greater Cincinnati Water Works plants has levels that exceed federal standards, as do nearby plants in Indian Hill, Loveland and Milford.
Join us on Thursday, November 7, 2024, to learn about what is being done to protect our communities against the risks of forever chemicals, and about what you can do to help.
