Nonprofit executive director departs after eight years for new role

The executive director of Green Umbrella, a local nonprofit environmental group and sustainability alliance, is departing after eight years.

Ryan Mooney-Bullock will become the next executive director of Gorman Heritage Farm, a nonprofit educational farm in Evendale. Van Sullivan, Green Umbrella’s senior director of programs and climate strategy, will become interim executive director Feb. 14.

Mooney-Bullock became the nonprofit’s top leader in 2018. Green Umbrella is focused on advancing sustainability efforts across 10 Greater Cincinnati counties.

“After nearly a decade of working on policy and systems change at a regional scale, I’m excited to get back to my roots and focus on stewarding a specific place and community. I look forward to being outdoors every day, raising awareness about and supporting a team of farmers, volunteers and educators who help people build meaningful relationships with the natural world and their food,” Mooney-Bullock said in a news release.

Sullivan joined Green Umbrella in 2020. The Green Umbrella board will do a search for the next permanent executive director.

“We are incredibly thankful for Ryan’s eight years of dedicated leadership and the collaborative culture she has helped build at Green Umbrella. It has not only been transformational for the organization but also for the broader Greater Cincinnati sustainability community,” Jaime Love, Green Umbrella’s board president, said in the release.

Green Umbrella works with governments, nonprofits, schools businesses and residents on sustainability initiatives. The nonprofit reported total 2024 revenue of more than $1.8 million.

Among its efforts are the Greater Cincinnati 2030 District, which helps building owners reduce energy, water and transportation-related emissions, and Tri-State Trails, which became a standalone nonprofit that promotes the construction and use of new bicycle and pedestrian trails and routes.
