Registration required.

Robert D. Bullard, Ph.D., the “father of environmental justice,” was the first scientist to publish systematic research on the links between race and exposure to pollution, which he documented for a 1979 lawsuit. Prior to that no one fully understood how a person’s surroundings can affect their health. For more than four decades, Bullard integrated human and civil rights with environmental justice. He embraced the principle that all people and communities have a right to equal protection and equal enforcement of environmental laws and regulations.

He argues that “America is segregated and so is pollution. Race and class still matter and map closely with pollution, unequal protection, and vulnerability. Individuals who physically live on the “wrong side of the tracks” are subjected to elevated environmental health threats and more than their fair share of preventable diseases. Still, too many people and communities have the “wrong complexion for protection.” Reducing environmental, health, economic and racial disparities is a major priority of the Environmental Justice Movement.” In 2008, Newsweek named Dr. Bullard as one of 13 Environmental Leaders of the Century.
