Spring Waterfowl Migration
March 16 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free
March in the Oxbow means ducks, as spring waterfowl migration reaches its peak during March. The Oxbow has historically been a magnet for migrating birds, especially for waterfowl. Other species of birds will be seen on this trip but it would be difficult to ignore the waterfowl during a March visit into the Oxbow area.
The term โwaterfowlโ implies species of the family Anatidae which includes ducks, geese and swans. At least 34 species of waterfowl have been recorded in the Oxbow over the years and about 25 of those occur regularly. In addition to waterfowl migration, many other signs of spring should be noticeable by this date. While It has become common to see Bald Eagles in the Oxbow area during any month of the year, March still represents the peak of spring migration for Bald Eagles so seeing an eagle is more than likely. Thereโs also a good chance flocks of Sandhill Cranes and large concentrations of gulls may also be seen. Other early spring migrant water birds and songbirds will be present, meaning a great diversity of species should be seen.
Shake off your cabin fever and join our trip leader Gary Stegner for this early spring morning visit. Gary, a long time Oxbow advocate and experienced naturalist and birder, knows the Oxbow area extremely well. He plans to lead us in and around the Oxbow looking for the diversity that early spring migration brings.
March also brings rain and potential flooding to the Oxbow bottoms, making some areas inaccessible . On the other hand, flood waters open up new and temporary areas where waterfowl and other water birds can forage, so Gary will adjust his plans on the day of the trip. Expect a little driving from spot to spot interspersed with some light walking. Dress for late winter and expect some mud on your shoes. This morning trip will end around noon. There are no restrooms in the Oxbow but they are available at nearby businesses. Feel free to contact Gary if you have any questions regarding this trip.
