Make and Take: Foraged Deodorant

Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.

Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults.

Program Description: Head out into the field to gather native witch hazel, then learn to transform our harvest into an herbal deodorant stick.
In this hands-on crafting class, we’ll:

touch on foraging safety, ethical foraging, and sustainable harvesting.
investigate the roles of the common base ingredients we’re using (anti-moisture, anti-microbial, odor absorption, etc.).
explore how to navigate between doing the job you want (deodorizing) with minimal detrimental effects (such as dry skin).
send you home with your own witch hazel deodorant stick.
About the Program Guide: John Hemmerle is the founder and managing director of Our Land Organics, an ecological landscape design/build company whose mission is to bring people closer to nature through innovative landscape design and management. John’s work incorporates his experience in urban planning, organic market gardening, and landscape architecture to build a future where we steward our landscapes in harmony with nature.

What to Expect: This is a hands-on class with an optional gathering in the field portion.

This program is mostly outdoors with indoor options available in the case of severe weather.
Trails/areas used during this program are rated as easy (mild hills, gravel trails) for a planned distance of 0.25-0.5 miles at a slow pace.
Restrooms are available at the start and end of the program. Restrooms are not available on the trails.
Program runs rain or shine.
Allergy note: coconut oil is the base of this herbal product.
What ingredients are in this product? Witch hazel decoction (a method of extraction), coconut oil, activated charcoal, essential oils, and arrowroot.
What to Bring: Bring your water bottle.

What to Wear: Dress in layered, loose, comfortable, athletic clothing—long cool pants suggested as we may step off-trail.
