Early Fall Migrant Shorebirds & Waders
August 23, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

This evening field trip will focus on birds, specifically early fall migrants through the Oxbow area. The southbound fall migration of shorebirds (sandpipers & plovers), long-legged waders (herons & egrets), and several other species will be underway. Most years the Oxbow area provides a good habitat for them, and the Great Miami River usually has exposed sand bars too.
We also should find numerous Great Egrets and night herons. Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret, while rare, are possible. Purple Martins and other migrating swallows โstageโ in large numbers in the Oxbow during August. Terns, Osprey, Bald Eagle, and other early migrants are possible. Most of our summer residents are still present so we should find a good diversity throughout the evening.
Leader Jay Stenger, a skilled birder, and well-rounded naturalist, knows the Oxbow area inside and out. We will start at a couple of spots around Oxbow Lake and then wrap up the evening at Lost Bridge over the Great Miami River. We suggest bringing water, sunscreen, and insect repellant. Contact Jay if you have any questions.
