Compost Harvest Day at College Hill Rec Center

The College Hill Recreation Center uses a unique composter called a Johnson-Su bioreactor to collect food scraps from the community via the MakeSoil app (www.makesoil.org). These food scraps become compost after breaking down in the bioreactor for 9-12 months. The compost in this bioreactor is now finished and ready to be harvested! At this event, we will harvest the compost and apply it to College Hill Rec’s garden beds. Harvesting finished compost involves shoveling compost from the bioreactor onto screens placed over buckets and wheelbarrows, and sifting the compost through the screens in order to remove any large pieces of wood chips that have not broken down yet.
