Cincinnati’s First Climate Week Makes Its Mark

June 8-14 was Cincinnati’s first ever Climate Week! Organizers all over the region hosted 67 events with more than a thousand attendees. Conferences, webinars, happy hours, volunteer days, social events for families and adults, and, of course, the Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit and the inaugural Green & Healthy Schools Symposium – thank you for showing up and showing out to make connections and build bridges to help drive climate action!

Meet the 2026 Climate Fellows

The Climate Action Fellowship, launched by Green Umbrella in 2024 and modeled after Indiana University’s Resilience Cohort, helps local governments create and carry out climate action plans. The Fellowship pairs students and professionals with Green Umbrella members to develop practical plans and solutions for a changing climate. Communities get training, personalized support, and host a summer fellow who works on projects that deliver real climate progress. You can meet this year’s cohort here.

Next Meet a Greenspace Hike: Forestlake Drive in Anderson Township

Join Green Umbrella’s Greenspace Alliance and Anderson Township Staff for a Meet A Greenspace Hike exploring the Forestlake Drive to Eight Mile Road Greenway. While our hikes are often for beginners, this one can be a bit trickier. The hike will be a moderate to strenuous out-and-back 1.6-mile, with a section in a creek bed with up to 8 inches of water. This will be an opportunity to learn about the Greenway, Anderson Township’s Greenspace program, and brainstorm about the future of this corridor. Learn more and register here.

Tinker Instead of Toss: New Life for Old Appliances

Do you have a coffee pot that doesn’t make coffee? Or a fan that doesn’t fan? The Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub’s Tinker Team is a group of volunteers that meets twice monthly to repair and revive broken, old, or unloved appliances. They were recently featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered”. Have a listen (or a read) here.

Love, Pride, Climate: Rachel Carson, Queer Icon

Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring, which laid out the extraordinary harm of pesticides, created a groundswell of support for the green movement that led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. In the past decades, it’s not just her work that has inspired – her personal life has too. It is now widely accepted that Carson was in love with her close friend, Dorothy Freeman, and author Lida Maxwell asserts that their time together in the woods of Maine was a driving factor in Carson’s advocacy.

This Pride Month, check out Rachel Carson and the Power of Queer Love by Lida Maxwell for a deeper understanding of a climate icon.
