First Cultivate + Connect Event Brings Together Food System Champions Across the Region

Thank you to all who attended and participated in last week’s Cultivate + Connect fundraising and networking event! It was wonderful to see 140 passionate local food champions come together to celebrate the impactful role we each play in creating a resilient regional food system in Greater Cincinnati. We hope you enjoyed the evening, cultivated new personal and professional connections, and that you left feeling nourished, rejuvenated, and inspired. We’d especially like to thank the 18 local businesses that participated in the evening’s delicious menu, our featured storytellers, and sponsors, Edible Ohio Valley, Metro, and Urban Artifact. See photos from the event here – we can’t wait to see you again next year!

Green Umbrella Attends Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Workshop in Minneapolis

Green Umbrella and Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments representatives recently took part in an EPA-hosted Climate Pollution Reduction Grants Technical Assistance Workshop at the McNamara Center in Minneapolis. Grant recipients, including tribes, government councils, and community-based organizations, gathered from across the country to engage in region-specific training and networking to drive climate pollution reduction. The event sparked inspiration and championed community collaboration, calling for early, transparent engagement and community-aligned solutions alongside actionable GHG emissions reduction targets. Visit ThriveTogether, our community engagement platform, for ways to stay engaged in regional CPRG work.

Green Umbrella Goes Global with Presentation at Terra Madre

Cynthia Walters, Green Umbrella’s Green Schoolyards Manager, is bringing our work to a global audience this week through her participation at the 2024 Terra Madre Salone del Gusto in Turin, Italy. This annual experience, co-led by Slow Food USA, brings leaders from across the food and nature education worlds to learn, eat, and be inspired. Cynthia will present the brand new School Wellness Policy Toolkit Green Umbrella has developed in partnership with Slow Food. You can learn all about it (without traveling to Italy!) by tuning into our **rescheduled** webinar on October 24.

City of Milford Codifies Climate Action Team

Congratulations to Green Umbrella member, the City of Milford, for codifying their new climate action team! This team was formed with the support and leadership of Green Umbrella Climate Action Fellow, Ella O’Maley, over the summer and will help elected officials and residents discuss local climate change challenges and create a climate action plan to address them.

Only two other cities in Southwest Ohio have similar plans: Cincinnati and Oxford. Communities interested in following in Milford’s footsteps can become a Green Umbrella Member today to access support from climate fellows like Ella in addition to many other climate action resources & tools!

Cincinnati Residents - Apply for Your Free Tree Today!

Cincinnati Parks’ Fall ReLeaf program is here and Cincinnati residents are invited to apply for a free tree to plant on your property. For the last 37 years, the ReLeaf program has grown, improved, and sustained the canopy coverage of Cincinnati, giving away 25,000 free trees and increasing the city’s overall tree canopy by 5 percent. Tree canopy is critical to reduce urban heat islands and improve air quality in communities. There’s only a handful of trees left this year so get your application in!
