2030 District Expands to Full Greater Cincinnati Region

Green Umbrella’s 2030 District will significantly expand its service territory and re-brand as the Greater Cincinnati 2030 District beginning this fall. District participation will open to commercial, public, nonprofit, and multi-family buildings across Green Umbrella’s 10-county service area, allowing the program to reach a wider audience and create more opportunities for professional partners and members. 2030 District Director, Wyatt King, will be traveling to communities across the region this fall and winter to give presentations on the how and why of energy and water benchmarking. In the meantime, community members are invited to join a free Benchmarking 101 and Intro to the Greater Cincinnati 2030 District webinar on September 12th.

August PSA: Air Quality and Climate in Greater Cincinnati

As of 2024, Greater Cincinnati was ranked the 22nd worst city in the US for year-round average particulate pollution and 42nd worst for smog. Poor air quality increases health risks and climate change is exacerbating these impacts. As part of our monthly “Climate Health Equity” series, Green Umbrella spoke with Dr. Partrick H. Ryan of UC’s Department of Pediatrics, about chronic respiratory disease including asthma and how we can individually and systemically address air quality issues across our region. Learn more about this issue on our new blog and view a recording of the webinar here.

35 Households to Receive Energy Efficiency Upgrades in OTR

The Multifamily Energy Efficiency Capital Upgrades Project – a program funded by the EPA and co-led by Green Umbrella, the City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment and Sustainability, Over-the-Rhine Community Housing, and three university research partners – is transitioning from planning & outreach to the implementation & upgrade phase. The project will weatherize 35 homes in Over-the-Rhine, including electrifying 17, to reduce energy burdens for residents in these buildings by an estimated 10% and provide data to inform expansion of this work and future policy action. Learn more about this award and stay tuned for updates as we work towards a greener, more energy-efficient Cincinnati!

City of Newport Approves New Bike Plan

The Newport Commission voted unanimously to support

Tri-State Trails’ bicycle transportation plan, which is being developed in collaboration with the City of Covington. The planning process started in January 2023 to create a roadmap for a safe, accessible, and connected bike network between the cities. Covington is set to vote on the item at the next commission meeting. While it may take time for the plan to reach implementation, Tri-State Trails will continue to partner with the cities to advance shorter-term, on-the-ground infrastructure.

Habitat Restoration Community Volunteer Day at Summit Park, with the

Ohio River Foundation

Join the Ohio River Foundation on September 15 as they remove harmful invasive species in Summit Park! Invasive species, such as honeysuckle and callery pear, are quickly taking over in our watershed. If not controlled, these invasive plants will cause environmental and economic harm to an ecosystem. Volunteers will hand saw/trim plants and trees and help drag them to the chipper area. By removing these invasive species, the Summit Park ecosystem will begin to function as it once did, naturally.
