Inaugural Climate Action Fellowship Comes to a Close with Local Government Showcase |

Green Umbrella’s 2024 climate action fellows, Elese Daniel, Ella O'Maley, and David Naibei, presented their incredible work to over 60 attendees at our Local Government Climate Action Showcase last week. Our fellows worked directly with the Cities of Covington, Milford, and Oxford for 10 weeks this summer to further climate action planning, helping these communities with energy benchmarking, greenspace and green infrastructure initiatives, and community engagement. Get Involved with School Wellness: An Interactive Conversation on Sept 10 |

The USDA requires a Local School Wellness Policy for school districts and educational agencies participating in the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program. Green Umbrella is hosting a webinar on September 10th about how you can participate in your school’s wellness policy. Sign up today to learn more about school wellness policies and how to create a school wellness committee during this interactive conversation co-hosted by Slow Food USA, featuring local school policy experts from the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce, Boston Public Schools, and more. Rumpke Opens Largest Recycling center in North America |

Rumpke Waste & Recycling has opened what it calls North America's largest and most sophisticated recycling center, capable of recycling 98% of all the material it receives. State, industry, and community leaders gathered in Columbus to commemorate this $100 million investment in sustainability on August 7th, celebrating the center’s ability to revolutionize recycling with cutting-edge technology.

Biden-Harris Administration Announce More Than $325M in Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants |

The US EPA announced 21 initial awardees of the $2 billion Community Change grant program – an Inflation Reduction Act initiative designed to help disadvantaged communities tackle environmental and climate justice challenges. Major awards were given to initiatives in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and more; you can view the the full list of grantees here. The Community Change program is still accepting applications through November 21, 2024. The EPA deadline to apply for technical assistance related to this program is August 16, 2024.

Clean Energy Tax Breaks More Popular Than Expected |

American consumers claimed $8.4 billion in Inflation Reduction Act tax breaks tied to boosting the energy efficiency of their homes in 2023, according to Internal Revenue Service data, a sum that exceeded officials’ projections. The tax breaks aim to reduce the cost of buying rooftop solar panels, electric heat pumps and other energy-efficient technologies, while also cutting the household greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to global warming and helping lower long-term utility bills for consumers.

Great Parks wants your feedback on proposed 25-mile trail |
Great Parks is collecting community feedback on a proposed 25-mile trail along the Great Miami River in western Hamilton County via a new virtual platform. Community members are invited to respond to an interactive survey or submit suggestions and questions to the Great Parks planning team regarding the trail, which will follow the Great Miami River corridor south to the Ohio River and connect to three Great Parks sites – Miami Whitewater Forest, Mitchell Memorial Forest, and Shawnee Lookout.
