New Riff Distillery Chooses Green Umbrella as 10th Anniversary Charitable Partner

We're grateful to have been selected as a charitable partner of New Riff's 10th Anniversary limited-release bourbon "Headliner" - anchored by the distillery's first batches of bourbon. Only about 700 bottles of Headliner will be released, with the distillery offering a lottery system for chances to purchase. Lottery chances may be purchased starting today through July 7 via New Riff’s website. Join us at New Riff's tasting room and cocktail bar on Friday, July 12 to celebrate and mingle.

Next Climate Safe Neighborhoods Workshop: Dayton, Kentucky

Groundwork Ohio River Valley (ORV) and Green Umbrella are working with residents and stakeholders to understand the relationship between the city’s history of race-based housing segregation and the current and predicted impacts of climate change. This partnership is called Climate Safe Neighborhoods (CSN) and collaborates closely with underserved neighborhoods to prioritize climate mitigation measures and push for their incorporation into community planning and policy processes.

The next neighborhood climate planning workshop as part of CSN is in Dayton, Kentucky on July 25 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Attendees will learn about how climate impacts the neighborhoods of Northern Kentucky and share ideas for environmental revitalization. Register for the free workshop here.

Adding Jobs & Tree Canopy in Lower Price Hill

Historical inequities in Lower Price Hill have led to the neighborhood having one of the smallest tree canopies in Cincinnati. Over the past several years, residents, Groundwork Ohio River Valley, Green Umbrella, and the City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment and Sustainability have been working together to change that.

Since 2022, 77 trees have been planted, and Groundwork’s Tree Ambassador program continues to employ community members to care for the trees. Today, the trees are big enough to create shade, but it will be “ a few years before you see big, shaded areas around the sidewalks and the boulevards and the streets,” Groundwork’s Tanner Yess told WVXU.

Great Park Receives Multi-Million Dollar Gift

The Farmer Family Foundation has given $3 million to Great Parks Forever, the philanthropic partner of Green Umbrella member Great Parks. The Foundation is also supplying $2 million in matching funds that, together with community donations, could lead to $7 million in donated funds. The donations are expected to go towards projects such as new trails, new park facilities and amenities, and improved access to conservation areas.

White House swears in the first class of American Climate Corps

This past June, the White House swore in the first class of the American Climate Corps. This federal program is intended to both increase sustainability efforts throughout the country and prepare young people to be climate leaders in their communities. Applicants selected for American Climate Corps roles are assigned limited, paid employment terms ranging from two months to over a year.

Most of them focus on bolstering local community initiatives, from connecting vulnerable communities to renewable energy grids and helping acquire grant funds to removing potential wildfire hazards from forests.

Supreme Court Rejects Legal Doctrine, Shifting Power from Agencies to Courts

In a ruling on June 28, the Supreme Court rejected a 40-year old legal doctrine known as the Chevron deference, which allowed federal agencies to use their expertise in decision-making when the written law was ambiguous. The decision means that federal agencies - such as those responsible for protecting public health, public safety, and the environment - no longer have the power to interpret the laws they carry out. Instead, the courts will “exercise their independent judgment in deciding whether an agency has acted within its statutory authority,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Environmental and public health advocates are concerned that this decision could set back efforts to reduce air and water pollution, restrict toxic chemicals, or take on new public health threats. The day before, the Supreme Court blocked enforcement of the EPA’s 2022 “good neighbor” rule, which restricts smokestack emissions from industrial sources that might negatively affect neighboring states - ie, preventing one state’s activities from polluting another.
