Common Orchard Project Compost Sale

After over a year of partnering with community food waste programs like Queen City Commons and working to process food scraps and wood chips, the compost program at Common Orchard Project is ready for the next step: selling the finished compost! Each 5 gallon (0.7 cubic feet) bag of finished, screened compost is $8 and represents a community effort towards reducing our carbon footprint, diverting waste from landfills, and creating a sustainable way to manage food waste. You can order compost and arrange for pick-up from the Camp Washington Perennial Farm at the link here.

June’s PSA Campaign: Extreme Heat, Climate Change, and Health Outcomes

The Ohio Valley is expected to experience extreme heat from a heat dome through this weekend. When a high-pressure system develops in the upper atmosphere, it causes the air below it to sink and compress. That raises temperatures in the lower atmosphere. Because hot air expands, it creates a bulging dome. A heat dome happens in the atmosphere; a heat wave is how that affects people on the ground.

Extreme heat is the focus of our June PSA Campaign. Read our post on heat, climate change, and health here: Bringing the Heat: How Rising Temperatures Affect Our Health.

Ohio Department of Aging Modernizes Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

The Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) is modernizing the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) for 2024 and beyond. Many eligible Ohioans ages 60 and older will now have the choice to use a mobile application or a physical card to obtain nutritious produce at farmers markets across the state.

These efforts were informed in part by Green Umbrella’s work with Produce Perks Midwest in producing An Exploration of Farmer’s Market Nutrition Programs, a comprehensive report focused on the digitization of nutrition incentives at farmer’s markets in Ohio.

The report highlights various programs as well as insights from interviews with market managers and vendors, addressing the increasing demand for streamlined digital benefits, diverse payment methods, and the challenges associated with infrastructure.
