Bye Bye, Berries - Common Orchard Project Loses Plants to Accident |
“This is a potential consequence of planting these orchards with more people and more opportunities to go wrong. I’m glad to know no people were hurt, and that none of the mature fruit trees were injured,” said Common Orchard Project Director, Chris Smyth. He estimates the cost of replacing the ruined plants to be $1000. In addition to the financial burden, it takes 3 years for aronia shrubs to mature and bear fruit. It has been an uncommonly difficult spring for the Common Orchard Project. Earlier this season, the Camp Washington Perennial Farm, the Common Orchard Project’s main hub and plant nursery, experienced a break-in, losing $1500 worth of tools and equipment.
If you want to support the Common Orchard Project in recouping the losses of the accident and break-in, you can contribute to Green Umbrella’s Spring Fundraising Campaign here. Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities to help rebuild the Schiff Avenue Orchard later this year.
