From Vision To Reality: Sustainability Summit’s Plenary Panel & Full Program

We recently announced 64 of the 80+ speakers for this year's 2024 Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit on May 2! This year's panels cover topics that range from transportation, high-performing buildings, and clean energy finance to neighborhood food projects, green workforce development, and artificial intelligence.

This year's plenary panel theme is From Vision to Reality: Mobilizing a Culture of Collaborative Climate Action.

In this session, Summit keynote speaker Jacqui Patterson will be joined by Naomi Davis (Blacks in Green), Tenzin Dolkar (McKnight Foundation), and Dan Saccardi (Ceres) to share insights, examples, and opportunities of how communities, governments, foundations, and businesses can lead the way together to increase climate resilience, enhance equity, and improve environmental health. Learn more and register for the Summit here.

Food Waste Prevention Week is April 1-7, 2024

Wasting food is expensive! Every year, Americans lose more than $218 billion on wasted food - and households are responsible for a LOT of it. That’s why Green Umbrella is a partner with Food Waste Prevention Week, a movement that calls for cultural change around the issue of food waste.

Learn more about how to reduce your household food waste, save money, and protect the environment at the Food Waste Prevention Week website!

Environmental Superheroes at Bond Hill’s Climate Safe Neighborhood Session

This past month, Climate Safe Neighborhoods (CSN) hosted an information session at the Bond Hill Recreation Center. Environmental “superheroes” shared CSN’s resident resources; showcased community gardens and options for volunteering in them; and answered questions about CSN’s work in making Cincinnati a healthier, safer place to live through education, equity, and collaborative action.

Superheroes' anonymity retained to protect secret identities

This event was organized by Groundwork Ohio River Valley in partnership with Green Umbrella, the City of Cincinnati, Civic Garden Center, and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.

$1B Solar Project Moves Forward in Madison County, Ohio

The Ohio Power Siting Board has approved what will be one of the largest solar farms in the United States. The proposed project, dubbed Oak Run, also includes a massive array of batteries that will allow the plant to keep dispatching firm power even when the sun isn’t shining. The largest solar project in the state by far, Oak Run will spread over 6,000 acres of farmland. When completed, it will be the nation’s largest demonstration of agrivoltaics, which combines farming and solar generation on the same plot of land.

State of Indiana Creates First Climate Action Plan

Indiana released initial plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the help of a federal grant. While this is a first for the state, at least a dozen Indiana cities have already made climate action plans. Climate advocates say there’s a lot to love in Indiana’s state plan, but the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is underestimating what the state can achieve. The state is expected to submit a more comprehensive plan to the federal government by fall of next year.

Art in Nature: Local Artist Invites Community to Create Pollinator Garden

Devan Horton, Cincinnati artist and artwork curator for the Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit, has an exciting new project: “Perennial”, the transformation of a vacant lot in Bellevue, KY into a pollinator meadow - and she’s inviting the community to help. On Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants will create art using natural dyes Devan created and seed paper full of native pollinator plant seeds before planting them in the lot. There will also be art and native plants for sale, and Roebling Books & Coffee will set up a mini library.
