First Green Drinks of 2024: February 22 at New Riff Distilling

Green Umbrella’s monthly sustainability happy hour is back! Join us on Thursday, February 22 at New Riff Distilling’s newly renovated Aquifer Bar in Newport, KY, for an evening of informal networking. This free event is open to anyone interested in climate action issues and getting involved in local sustainability initiatives.

New Riff sources the water for their whiskey from an aquifer directly beneath the distillery. The consistent, cool temperature of this water helps save energy by reducing the need for water-cooling equipment in the production process. New Riff prioritizes local sourcing, with most of its grains coming from farmers in Southeast Indiana.

Cardinal Land Conservancy: Eagle Cam Reveals New Egg!

The Cardinal Land Conservancy streams footage from solar cameras on a nest of bald eagles, Bonnie & Clyde, and the first egg of 2024 was laid on Tuesday, February 13! The Eagle Cam streams nest activity January through July from the Bortz Family Nature Preserve in Cincinnati, a 119-acre preserve at the meeting of the Little Miami and the Ohio River.

Bald eagles prefer homes near good, healthy water sources where they can fish. After nearing extinction in the 60s & 70s because of the toxic pesticide DDT, bald eagle populations have been growing since the pesticide was banned. In 2007, they were taken off the endangered species list, and today there are at least 900 bald eagle nests in Ohio.

One Year Later: OEC Reports on Ohio Toxic Train Derailment

On February 3, 2023 , a train operated by Norfolk Southern derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, catching fire and spilling toxic chemicals into the environment. Following the derailment, the Ohio Environmental Council pledged to monitor the impact of the toxic chemical release on the community and advocate for long-term regulatory and policy solutions to ensure environmental disasters like this never happen again. Visit OEC’s site here for the latest updates.

In East Palestine, the crash site is still under active cleanup and construction . While EPA testing concludes that local water, drawn from the town’s water supply and private wells, is safe to drink, many still report feeling ”sick with nausea, rashes, and other ailments in the wake of the danger.” Some experts are worried that the water tests are not sensitive enough to conclusively determine the water’s potability. Despite ongoing health concerns, the majority of residents are ready to focus on the town’s future. According to East Palestine’s mayor Trent Conaway, “Eighty percent of the people want us to … move on. Be done. To try to come back to where we once were.”

Who wants to frack under an Ohio state park? State law keeps it a secret

Sunday, February 4 was the deadline for companies to apply to extract oil and natural gas from underneath three eastern Ohio state parks: Salt Fork State Park in Guernsey County, Valley Run Wildlife Area in Carroll County, and Zepernick Wildlife Area in Columbiana County.

A 2011 law, reinvigorated by a 2023 commission , allows applicants to apply in secret - meaning that Ohioans won’t know who wants to frack under state parks until Ohio’s Oil & Gas Land Commission selects a winner. While the Ohio Oil & Gas Association says that the confidentiality is intended to “encourage more bidders ”, opponents say the secrecy benefits the oil and gas companies, who might not want the public to know they applied to frack state parks.
