TANK Changes Routes & Fares Starting in March

The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK), which provides public transit to Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties and downtown Cincinnati, is removing five routes and increasing fares beginning March 22. Ridership plunged during the pandemic and is still down 30%, while costs have risen. About 57% of the people who ride have no access to another vehicle and 52% earn less than $20,000 a year.

Food As Medicine Conference with Urban Farming Initiative

Green Umbrella Member Urban Farming Initiative recently hosted a Food As Medicine mini-conference at the University of Cincinnati. Food As Medicine leverages food and nutrition as a key strategy for holistic health, including medically-tailored meals, produce prescriptions, and healthy food policies at all levels from the federal government down to individual organizations. 60% of US adults have diet-related chronic disease, and innovations in food systems tap into this great space of opportunity to use food as our medicine.

If the planet is warming, why is it so cold?

Great question! Many climate skeptics use unusual winter storms and freezing temperatures as evidence that global warming isn’t real - for example, the winter storm that toppled power grids in Texas in 2021 or the major snows along the Gulf Coast at the end of January this year. But recent research suggests that these weather events are a result of climate change, not evidence against it.

The swirling body of cold air that encompass the Arctic is known as the polar vortex. The polar vortex is typically contained by a global jet stream, the speed of which is controlled by the stark difference between the cold northern air and warmer southern air. Because the Arctic is warming much faster than the rest of the world, the difference in those air temperatures is shrinking, which can destabilize the jet stream and allow frigid Arctic air to move south, causing extreme or unusual cold weather.
