A message from the Greenspace Alliance Manager:

There is something about spring that both figuratively and literally warms my heart. It is the slow dethaw from winter’s grasp and the slow yet sudden revival of life springing forth from the tree branches and the previously dormant soil. I spent many afternoons in March and April trudging joyously through rain-drenched paths and misty weather, soaking up the vibrant colors of new growth and the cheerful sounds of calling birds as they enjoyed the new season’s warmth.

Not only does the spring usher in new growth for our natural world, but also for the Greenspace Alliance! You can learn more about what we’ve been up to below.

Cheers,

Claire Carlson

New Growth

Coming Soon: Regional Prioritization Plan (RPP) Training

Green Umbrella will host Climate Fellows in Kenton, Campbell, and Butler County governments this summer. Fellows will work with local government officials to kick-start climate action and planning in their jurisdiction. To further conservation efforts in the region, the Greenspace Alliance developed an Regional Prioritization Plan (RPP) training program to expand knowledge on its use for greenspace protection. The training for these governments will begin this month, with plans to later expand RPP training to other jurisdictions, Greenspace Alliance partners, and community members.

Exploring Our Region

Meet a Greenspace Hiking Series

Remaining connected to natural spaces can be difficult when you spend your days inside, logged on to your computer, and logged out of nature. Sound familiar? Join us for our new monthly Meet a Greenspace Hiking Series.

The series will explore a different area each month, from greenspace gems to urban strolls. The tours will last one hour and are open to anyone interested. There is no agenda. These hikes aim to reconnect us with nature, ourselves, and others.

Our next hike will be on Friday, June 7th, from 3:00-4:00 pm at Highland Cemetery Nature Trails in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

Partner Spotlight: Mill Creek Alliance

Mill Creek Alliance is working with Tri-State Trails and other partners to complete the CROWN trail network by extending the Mill Creek Greenway Trail from the Yellow Bridge in South Cumminsville south to the Ohio River. This will include providing family-friendly stream access ramps for the public near Yellow Bridge and Gest Street in Lower Price Hill, enabling all residents to enjoy this beautiful green (and blue) corridor through the heart of our region.

Funding Opportunities

Featured Opportunity: H2Ohio Rivers Initiative

The H2Ohio Rivers Initiative, through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), has funding available for land acquisition for floodplain properties with good conservation value, dam removal, and dump site cleanup in flood plains.

ODNR has two years to spend the available funding, with only a few months remaining in the program's first year. This is a prime opportunity for nonprofits to take on projects that might be too large for them.

H2Ohio Rivers Initiative is an expansion of the H2Ohio program to provide financial assistance to the counties in Southern Ohio whose land drains into the Ohio River.

Other Grant Opportunities

OSI: Land and Climate Catalyst Planning Grant Letter of Intent due May 17

Bank of America Economic Mobility Focused on the Needs of the Community Grant Proposals accepted from May 27-June 12
