SUMMARY:Meet A Greenspace at Shawnee Lookout!
DESCRIPTION:Join Green Umbrella’s Greenspace Alliance and Great Parks for a Meet A Greenspace Hike on Friday\, January 23rd\, from 3-4:30 pm at Shawnee Lookout! \nOnce home to the indigenous peoples who lived in this region for 10\,000 years\, Shawnee Lookout has since been converted to a golf course and\, more recently\, a park. The landscape is quite hilly\, with over 9\,000 feet of streams that were once buried by culverts during its time as a manicured lawn. Today\, due to the efforts of Great Parks and The Nature Conservancy\, these streams are being restored to the surface through a process called “daylighting”. \nIf you’re interested in learning about local restoration projects or simply want to get outside this winter\, join us for 1 mile hike to learn about the work happening at this historic site! This will be a strenuous and most-likely muddy hike\, as the restoration work will be midway through completion. Please wear proper clothing\, sturdy shoes that can handle mud and snow\, and bring your own water and snacks. \nParking is available at the former clubhouse\, located at 2008 Lawrenceburg Road\, North Bend\, OH\, 45052. \nIf you have any questions\, contact Greenspace Alliance Manager Claire Carlson at claire@greenumbrella.org. \nThe Greenspace Alliance would also like to thank its sponsors\, Duke Energy and the Cincinnati Wildflower Preservation Society\, for making these events possible.

SUMMARY:Fall Migration: Warblers & Shorebirds
DESCRIPTION:September is the peak of fall migration for songbirds (especially warblers) and shorebirds. Many other species like early waterfowl\, long-legged waders\, terns\, raptors and more also migrate south in September.\nOur trip leader\, Jack Stenger\, an expert birder and naturalist\, has regularly birded in the Oxbow since the age of ten and has great knowledge of the area. Jack’s exceptional field skills will aid us in finding a great diversity of species\, which is the primary focus on this field trip. \nJack will begin this field trip at the Shawnee Lookout Park entrance. By mid-morning Jack will lead us to the Oxbow\, stopping at Lost Bridge over the Great Miami River along the way. We should find shorebirds (sandpipers & plovers) and wading birds in both the Lost Bridge and Oxbow area. These combined areas should provide a great morning of birding. Warblers and many other songbirds\, herons & egrets\, terns\, other water birds and hawks\, including Osprey & Bald Eagles\, are all likely to be found during this morning trip. We’ll walk a bit on this trip\, but at a comfortable birding pace. Binoculars are necessary to see birds. Restrooms are available at Shawnee Lookout. A Hamilton County Park Motor Vehicle Permit is required at Shawnee Lookout and can be purchased at the entrance. Please feel free to contact Jack if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Annual Moonlit Evening Winter Walk — AKA Morris Mercer Memorial Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:One of Oxbow Inc.’s beloved founders\, Morris Mercer\, loved the night winter woods\, especially when there was snow on the ground. He and his good friend John Klein started this night walk in the Shawnee Lookout woodlands that overlook the Oxbow many years ago. Morris is no longer with us\, but John keeps Morris’s spirit alive by continuing this annual field trip\, which we refer to as the Morris Mercer Memorial field trip. If you are looking for a unique experience\, join John as he leads us on about a two-hour night walk around Shawnee Lookout Park. John\, an Oxbow Inc. board member\, and retired Land Manager for the Hamilton County Park District is the perfect guide. This date will be just after a full moon\, with a fair chance that owls\, deer and flying squirrels will be seen or heard. John will talk about the history of the Oxbow and the Shawnee Lookout area and also do a bit about stargazing. As always at some point\, John will pass out M & Ms to celebrate Morris’s memory.\nMeet John in the parking lot of the closed Shawnee Lookout Golf Course Clubhouse at 7:00 pm. The rangers will have the entrance gates open for us. Remember to dress warmly. While John\, like Morris\, would like a little snow on the ground\, severe weather will cancel this trip. If you are unsure if the trip is cancelled\, call John at (513) 304-2310. \nVisit the Shawnee Lookout website at http://www.greatparks.org/parks/shawnee-lookout\nDirections to Shawnee Lookout Park: Shawnee Lookout is located at 2008 Lawrenceburg Road\, North Bend Ohio 45052. To get there from I-275\, take Kilby Road Exit # 21. Turn right onto Kilby Rd and go to the light at US 50 and turn right. Go about 1.7 miles to Lawrenceburg Road and turn left at the light. Follow Lawrenceburg Road across the bridge (Lost Bridge) over the Great Miami River. Turn right at the stop sign and go about 1.5 miles to the entrance to Shawnee Lookout Park on the left. Follow the Park Rd to the Old Golf Course. A Motor Vehicle Permit (MVP) is required for all Hamilton County Parks. The price of the annual MVP is $10 for a Hamilton County resident and $16 for a non-resident. Daily MVP’s can be purchased for $5 each for Hamilton County residents and $8 for non-residents. If you don’t have a MVP don’t let that keep you home. You can always buy one from a ranger if necessary.
