SUMMARY:Balcony Solar – You’ve heard the buzz\, now get the facts!
DESCRIPTION:When: Monday\, Aug. 3\, meet and greet 6:30 PM\, discussion 7-9 PM\nWhere: Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church\, Geier Room\, 103 William Howard Taft Road\, Cincinnati. Parking available behind church. \nWhat is balcony solar? Will it save me money? Is it safe? Is it legal? How does it work? Do I need a balcony? Where can I buy it? These are some of the questions people are asking about balcony solar.\nIn the last year\, 10 states have legalized balcony solar\, also called plug-in solar\, and many more states have legislation pending. It’s a hot discussion topic. Does the reality live up to the hype? \nJoin us for Sierra Club’s August Educational Forum where Larry Falkin and Nathan Alley will team up to demystify balcony solar. We’ll start with “show and tell”\, unpacking and setting up a balcony solar kit. We’ll address some of the technical and legal issues raised by balcony solar. Then it’s discussion time. Ask your questions. Share your perspective. Maybe there will be people in the audience who are already using balcony solar. We’d love to hear those stories. \nTo join via Zoom register here

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Educational Forum: Nuclear Energy\, Promoted by the AI Craze
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Fankhauser\, Professor emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati\, will discuss the history of environmental and health threats from the use of nuclear energy\, both military and domestic. High-tech oligarchic\, corporations\, flush with hundreds of billions of dollars\, are in the process of constructing trillions of dollars in data centers. In the process\, they are exploiting secret deals\, including surreptitious land purchases\, major tax abatements. \nBesides the disappearance of farmland\, these data centers place an extraordinarily high demand on electricity and consume large quantities of precious water. These are resulting in significantly higher\, electricity costs\, and concerns about water availability. \nOne of the “solutions“ these mega corporations offer is to resurrect the moribund nuclear industry. The underlining problem with the nuclear industry\, as always\, is the “silent but deadly“ problem of radioactivity. Its danger is raised at every stage of the fuel cycle\, whether mining and resulting tailings\, refining\, fabrication\, and especially the disposal of spent fuel for geological periods of time. \nDr. Fankhauser will present an illustrated discussion of the history of environmental and health threats from the use of nuclear energy\, both military and domestic. Special reference will be made to Fernald and Zimmer in Greater Cincinnati. \nPhoto courtesy Ellen Brenneman

SUMMARY:Living Well in the Post-Growth Era: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the March Sierra Club Miami Group Education Forum\, “Living Well in the Post-Growth Era: A Small-Group Discussion” \nWhen: March 2\, 2026 – 7-9 pm\nWhere: Mt\, Auburn Presby Church (Geier Rm)\, 103 Wm Howard Taft Road\, 45219. \nPanel: Larry Falkin\, Susan Sprigg\, and Tom Brian (WorldWatch Institute) \nWhat will happen when the economy\, energy use\, and human population\, all stop growing? Most Americans think that growth is essential for their well-being. They worry about the dangers of stagnation. Others believe that unrestrained growth on a finite planet is the root of all that ails us. This debate pits flawed conventional economics against ecological constraints. \nWhether you think it’s good or bad\, we know that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. A “Post-Growth” economy prioritizes human well-being\, ecological sustainability\, and equitable resource distribution\, over growth. \nFree Parking behind church. Join us at 6:30 for a meet and greet. Or join via Zoom here:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/H52K80uCQmiSwAzZUffzfw

SUMMARY:“Untangling Plastics” The Missing Link in Mitigating Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Club Miami Group Educational Forum is pleased to welcome Bob Gedert\, past president of the National Recycling Coalition and author of the new book – Untangling Plastics: The Missing Link in Mitigating Climate Change. Bob draws from his 45-year career in the recycling industry and his recent research to reveal the misguided mindsets that have led the movement for sustainability. His book is a comprehensive investigation of the manufacturing\, proliferation\, and disposal of plastics – their harmful impacts on the environmental and human health. \nMost people consider plastic consumer items and packaging as beneficial and generally inert or harmless. Yet the plastic in our household products are made from hundreds of chemicals originating from petrochemical factories that also produce oil and gas. \nIn his talk\, Bob will explain how consumers have actually been complicit in causing these harmful impacts. How can we untangle ourselves from our plastic habit and adopt greener ways of living? \nSierra Club Miami Group Education Forum Series\n7 PM Monday\, Jan. 5\, 2026\nMt. Auburn Presbyterian Church\, 103 William Howard Taft Road\, Cincinnati \nFree parking behind church. Program starts at 7 PM. Join us 6:30 PM for a meet & greet. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Educational Forum - Smart Trash – Repeal the Stealth Trash Fee
DESCRIPTION:The average Cincinnati household spends more than $200 per year on trash disposal\, yet many Cincinnatians think trash is free because they pay for it through their taxes rather than as a separate bill. \nThis “Stealth Trash Fee” costs residents and the City more than it should\, and is the root of several regional problems. We can replace the Stealth Trash Fee with a Smart Trash Fee. Doing so will save money\, improve service\, create jobs\, stimulate the local economy\, reduce landfill dependence\, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. \nJoin our presenters Larry Falkin and Bob Gedert to learn the details at our first Educational Forum of 2025 \nWhen: Monday February 3\, 2024 – 7 -9 pm\nWhere: Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church\, 103 William Howard Taft Rd\, Cincy 45219 \nFree parking behind church. Join us early at 6:30 pm for a Meet & Greet. Or register to join via Zoom
