SUMMARY:Compost Harvest Day at College Hill Rec Center
DESCRIPTION:The College Hill Recreation Center uses a unique composter called a Johnson-Su bioreactor to collect food scraps from the community via the MakeSoil app (www.makesoil.org). These food scraps become compost after breaking down in the bioreactor for 9-12 months. The compost in this bioreactor is now finished and ready to be harvested! At this event\, we will harvest the compost and apply it to College Hill Rec’s garden beds. Harvesting finished compost involves shoveling compost from the bioreactor onto screens placed over buckets and wheelbarrows\, and sifting the compost through the screens in order to remove any large pieces of wood chips that have not broken down yet. \nInterested in volunteering at this event? Email Laura Lair at laura.lair@cincinnati-oh.gov to sign up! \nThe College Hill Recreation Center is located at 5545 Belmont Ave\, Cincinnati\, OH 45224

SUMMARY:Free Food Scrap Drop-off in College Hill
DESCRIPTION:Organization: City of Cincinnati\, Office of Environment and Sustainability \nAbout the event: \nOES in partnership with the College Hill Recreation Center\, is piloting a free food scrap drop-off program to help divert organics from the landfill. Residents can drop off their vegetative food scraps every Tuesday from 3pm-5pm at the College Hill Recreation Center at 5545 Belmont Avenue. \nMaterials you can drop off are limited to: \n\nFruits\nVegetables\nGrains (bread\, rice\, oats\, etc.)\nCoffee grounds and coffee filters\nSpices\nHouse plant clippings and old house plant soil\nCut flowers (with no paint\, ribbon\, or other decoration)\n\nIf you participate in the drop-off and register at MakeSoil as a soil supporter\, you are eligible to receive a countertop food scrap collection container. \nThe food scraps get composted on site with a bioreactor composting system\, ultimately for use within the garden at the Rec Center. \nOES\, the Common Orchard Project\, and the Community Composter Coordinator\, have worked on installing Johnson-Su Bioreactors on many community garden and orchard sites within the City of Cincinnati. Johnson-Su Bioreactors are a passively aerated\, no-turn composting system capable of composting up to one ton of material. These bioreactors are filled with a blend of wood chips and vegetative food scraps collected from Cincinnati restaurants and residents. This material is based on work supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, under agreement number NR213A750001C025. \nThe Johnson-Su composting system has been built\, tested\, and improved upon with the Walnut Hills gardens since 2020\, with additional leadership from Gary Dangle and the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation\, and now we’re working to expand bioreactors to community gardens and food waste drop off sites around Cincinnati. \nFor more information\, email oes@cincinnati-oh.gov. \nMore information can be found here.
