Sustainability Spotlight

It's Still National Bike Month, So Let's Venture Out on Two Wheels

Trail use is up all around Greater Cincinnati and we hope you are getting out on your bike this month. Typically we celebrate National Bike Month in Greater Cincinnati with a series of 50+ group rides and public events. While COVID-19 has changed the way we’re able to celebrate this year, Tri-State Trails has compiled a variety of fun activities:

Lighthouse Green Learning Center to Offer Education & Job Training

Lighthouse Youth & Family Services is launching a Green Learning Center this spring, which will provide learning and mentoring opportunities for youth interested in growing native trees for community reforestation, designing demonstration sites and developing life and business skills associated with urban agriculture and conservation.

Groundwork Ohio River Valley will partner with the Civic Garden Center and other community organizations to lead year-round programming at the Green Learning Center that offers students at Lighthouse Community School environmental education, summer job opportunities and hands-on job training in urban conservation and ecological restoration through Groundwork's Green Corps program.

Edible City Project Envisions Our Regional Food System

Interested in the past, present and future of Greater Cincinnati's food system? Green Umbrella is proud to partner with Wave Pool and Cincinnati Museum Center on the Edible City Project, which visualizes our foodshed's past, present and future with maps, infographics and original artwork. It will culminate in a beautiful coffee table book available for pre-order.

Cincinnati Museum Center recently sat down with project lead Alan Wight to talk about how Greater Cincinnati is home to several world-renowned permaculture teachers. Check out the video to learn about their projects and vision for the future.

Permaculture is a design science that uses the patterns observed in nature to create more productive, diverse and resilient landscapes capable of providing food, energy, shelter and our other needs in a sustainable way.
