Sustainability Spotlight

Year of Living Sustainably: Nature Connection & Gardening

Celebrate the first day of spring by getting outside and connecting with nature, this month's Year of Living Sustainably theme! Get in touch with your roots by visiting one of our local Greenspace Gems or tending to your own garden. Visit our events calendar to see the many opportunities to connect with nature through our member organizations.

Vote for Tri-State Trails at REI

Help us CROWN Cincinnati with a 30-mile separated trail loop around Cincinnati's urban core! During REI's Loving Our Local Outdoors grant competition, any co-op member who makes a purchase before April 8 will be given a wooden nickle to vote for one of three local stewardship projects. Green Umbrella's Tri-State Trails initiative is in the running to receive funding for the CROWN project.

Register for the Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit

Register for the 2019 Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit held on June 14! Keynote speaker Andrew Winston will set the stage for our theme: From Green to Gold: Opportunities in the New Sustainable Economy. We'll explore how businesses and communities can benefit from incorporating sustainable practices through breakout sessions including "Opportunities with the Cincinnati 2030 District" and "Green New Deal's Impact for Southwest Ohio." See all of our session topics on our website and contact Rashida Manuel about opportunities to sponsor the event or be an exhibitor.

Action Teams

Action Teams bring together people and organizations who share common goals around environmental issue areas. Teams implement strategies to drive progress on our 2020 GoalsGreen Umbrella also has three Initiatives: Tri-State Trails, the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council, and the Cincinnati 2030 District.

Greenspace Gem: California Woods

Formed in the 1930s, California Woods supports some 50 species of upland and riparian trees and more than 200 species of native wildflowers. Protected by Cincinnati Parks, this 113-acre preserve borders the Magrish Riverlands Preserve, a little Miami River floodplain forest and designated Important Birding Area.

Support California Woods by volunteering at the nature preserve's Green Day on April 13.  Afterwards, you can enjoy a guided Wildflower Walk from 1:30 - 3:00 pm.
