Green Umbrella Awards $125,000 for a Sustainable Food System

Green Umbrella has awarded $125,000 in funding that will benefit food insecure residents in Cincinnati’s low-income neighborhoods, small farms, local food entrepreneurs and processors, a neighborhood grocery coop, schools, and regional food pantries. These grants will advance regional environmental sustainability goals related to local food distribution, food waste reduction, fresh food access, and energy-efficiency. Discover the 12 awardees

Thank you to the funders who made this possible: Duke Class Benefit Fund and Partners for Places, with local matching grants from Interact for Health, The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, and the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

Announcing the Mill Creek Alliance

Two Green Umbrella members, Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities and Groundwork Cincinnati-Mill Creek have been working for years to improve the health of the Mill Creek. Their next strategic step is to merge into one organization: the Mill Creek Alliance. The merger comes at a time when conditions in the creek and its watershed are the best they’ve been in decades: fish and wildlife have returned, flood control has improved, water quality is better, people canoe and fish in the stream again, and the creek has been removed from a list of the nation’s Most Endangered Rivers. But there is still much work to be done!

The public is invited to celebrate and learn more at a special event on Friday, March 2 at 11:00 am at Salway Park in Cincinnati, overlooking the Mill Creek.

Invasive Plants Workshop

Green Umbrella’s Greenspace Action Team is partnering with member Western Wildlife Corridor to host a hands-on Invasive Plants Workshop on Saturday, March 31 at the Kirby Nature Preserve. Learn how to identify the plants that may be taking over your property, and how to successfully remove them to make room for native plant communities. Register online by March 25.
