Sustainability Spotlights

Meet Our New Green Schoolyards Coordinator

Cynthia Walters has joined the Green Umbrella staff as the Green Schoolyards Coordinator. Cynthia will be collaborating with community partners through the CPS Outside Impact Team to realize the vision that all Cincinnati Public Schools’ students have equitable access to outdoor experiences and environmental education. In her first month with us she has been on a whirlwind tour of the district, helping close to 20 schools assess how their campuses could be improved to encourage outdoor learning and nature-based play and discovery. Cynthia will also be supporting teachers and educators across the region by helping them connect to Farm to School materials and programming aligned with state educational standards.

Pop-up Bike Shop Series Improves Bike Safety and Accessibility

This year, Tri-State Trails teamed up with local bicycle organizations and community groups to create eight Pop-Up Bike Shops in different communities across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky - with bike repair stands, tool buckets, and bike gear giveaways to help folks bring their bikes back to life. Another series is being planned for 2022. Stay tuned for more information about event locations and opportunities to get involved!

Neighborhood Rallies to Reopen Grocery Store in Lower Price Hill

After their local grocery store closed, Lower Price Hill residents came together to create a new neighborhood-driven grocery store for their community. Neighborhood leaders and members of the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council’s Community Advisory Board, Reba Hennessy and Marisha Davis, are part of a team of Lower Price Hill residents who successfully launched the new Meiser's Fresh Grocery & Deli. The effort has brought fresh food access back to the neighborhood - and provides a great model for other food insecure communities!

Greenspace Gem: Ellis Lake Wetlands

Protected by West Chester Township Parks, Ellis Lake Wetlands in Butler County is a 300-acre wetland park along the Miami and Erie Canal corridor. It is a small oasis in an area otherwise heavily industrialized. This is a birding hot-spot that includes willow-fringed waterbodies, former ice ponds, and the site of a nineteenth-century ice house. Flood-control overflows from the Mill Creek create temporary pools that serve as feeding areas for migrating birds. Learn more about our region's many Greenspace Gems!
