Make a Sustainability Resolution Today!

As we welcome in the New Year, we invite you to set some sustainability resolutions. Here’s how the Green Umbrella Action Teams recommend ringing in 2018.

  • Energy: Conduct a free whole home energy assessment at
  • Greenspace: Visit a local protected greenspace and tell us if you know of a potential greenspace protection project.
  • Local Food: Shop local year round at winter farmer’s markets and groceries that carry locally grown food.
  • Outdoor: Don't let the cold keep you indoors. Check out fun activities to get outside on the Green Umbrella events calendar... and bring a friend!
  • Transportation: Get out of your car 1 day/week. Explore #CROWNcincinnati.
  • Watershed: Pick up that trash… before it gets to a waterway!

Metro wants to hear from you

The SORTA board has authorized Metro to put a sales tax levy on the ballot in November 2018 and is seeking public input about the potential levels of this levy and the resulting impacts on Metro’s operations and facilities. To add your voice to the conversation, complete the online survey

SEED Ohio Pilot Program Encourages Donating to Save the Planet, Soapbox Media

Professional Resources

Green Umbrella is accepting proposals for the Cincy Save the Food Fund. A total of $50,000 will be awarded to at least four GU member organizations to develop innovative, scalable food recovery efforts. Applications are due 1/26/18. 

Green Umbrella is accepting proposals for Energy-Efficient Refrigeration for the Local Food System. A total of $75,000 will be distributed to at least five GU member organizations to fund improved refrigeration infrastructure that will strengthen regional distribution of locally grown food, improve fresh food access for the food insecure, and reduce wasted food. Applications are due 1/26/18. 

Do you have an audacious idea for improving our region's sustainability? People's Liberty will be accepting applications for the 2018 Haile Fellowships from January 10-26. Two fellows will each receive $100,000 to research, plan, implement and present the results of a big idea that could change our community’s future. An information session will be held 1/10/18 at 5:30 pm.

Our Harvest Cooperative is offering a USDA GAP Food Safety Training for Kentucky farmers on 1/30/18. Participants will learn about current regulations and develop a food safety plan. This is a free all-day workshop with an optional catered lunch.

Greater Cincinnati Foundation has issued the Providing a Safety Net for Individuals and Families RFP. Grants will fund efforts that ensure vulnerable residents of our region have access to food and shelter. Proposals are due 2/2/18.

The Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative is accepting proposals for its Summer of STEM grant program. Among other categories, GCSC will award several mini-grants, up to $3,500 each, to support programs designed to occur primarily outdoors, in nature’s perfect science lab. Applications are due 2/5/18.

Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District is offering a free Food Waste Prevention presentation for workplaces. Save the Food: Learn Tips and Tricks to Reduce Your Grocery Bill is 45 minute program, which can be offered as part of a staff meeting, lunch and learn, or a stand-alone presentation (12 participants or more required). Email for more information or to reserve a spot.
