Sustainability Spotlights

Ohio Named Second Most Endangered River in Nation

National nonprofit American Rivers recently named their top ten most endangered rivers of the nation. The Ohio River claimed 2nd place, surpassed by only the Colorado River. The designation is due to significant pollution that threatens the health of the river’s ecosystems and the people dependent on the river, including the 5 million people whose primary source of water is the river. The last time the Ohio was on this list was in 1992.

American Rivers describes the report as "a list of rivers at a crossroads, where key decisions in the coming months will determine the rivers' fates."

Green Umbrella Endorses the Local Farms and Food Act

Green Umbrella and the Greater Cincinnati Food Policy Council endorses the Local Farms and Food Act of 2023 as a Marker Bill for the 2023 Farm Bill Reauthorization process. This bipartisan bill "makes programmatic reforms and increases funding to scale for existing demand, which will strengthen regional food system infrastructure and coordination, reduce barriers for participation, and ensure federal nutrition benefits support local markets."

The bill is cosponsored by Senators Sherrod Brown, Tina Smith, and Peter Welch, and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Dan Newhouse. In addition to Green Umbrella
