NEW REPORT: Cincinnati’s 2021 Climate Equity Indicators

Green Umbrella partnered with the University of Cincinnati, Groundwork Ohio River Valley, and the City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment and Sustainability on an analysis of neighborhood-level demographic, environmental, health outcome, economic, and planning indicators. This analysis highlights key climate risks, and the geographic, social, and economic factors that should be considered in assessing vulnerability. The Climate Equity Indicators report will be a foundational data set

for future Green Cincinnati Plan recommendations, and will help the City and community partners develop strategies to build a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future. Read the report here!

Policies Supporting Innovative Regional Supply Chains Deliver

Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) and Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council (GCRFPC) Farm to School partners have been able to mitigate recent fresh produce supply chain gaps and keep students fed. In January 2019, the CPS Board adopted the Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP), which played an instrumental role in supporting the regional food system - especially during the pandemic. CPS has also benefited from its investment in the regional food system, utilizing the flexibility and reliability of local food to continue serving the nutritional needs of families during a period of supply chain shortages. Read more about the

successful partnership and how you can take action to support resilient regional food systems on the GCRFPC blog.

Our Final Greenspace Gem:
Kirby Nature Preserve

Protected by Western Wildlife Corridor, Kirby Nature Preserve is over 50 acres of hilly woodlands, prairie and riparian corridors. Through many hours of work, volunteers have cleared invasive plants and planted native wildflowers. In addition to being a demonstration of land restoration, the property has an 1,800 sf nature center, education facility and event space.

Today's posting concludes Green Umbrella's series on outstanding protected natural areas in our region. The forty "Greenspace Gems" we've featured are examples of places that merit preservation because of their outstanding scenic value, biological diversity, scientific importance or historic interest. Our region has numerous irreplaceable natural treasures not included here - and alarmingly, many of them lack protection.

A wide range of protectors defend these “Gems,” through ownership and conservation easements — nonprofit local and national conservancies, land trusts, nature centers, and foundations; state, county, city, and township park organizations; state departments of natural resources; county conservation districts; and even a federal government agency, a cemetery, a university, a historical society, and a neighborhood association. Thousands of volunteers help maintain and restore these places. Importantly, the continuing protection of our natural treasures is only possible with the support of our residents. Your contributions, volunteer efforts, and votes matter.
