A Word from the Director

As a community we are faced with many challenges which are disproportionately affecting our Black and Brown community members. We recognize the importance of growing a culture of racial equity and inclusion within the sustainability space. Black lives and voices do matter, and they are essential for solving the challenges facing our world.

Through our parent organization, Green Umbrella, we are examining our mindsets and practices to do better as an organization, and to provide a better space for inclusion within the sustainable building community. We are utilizing Equity in the Center as a model to address these topics and we invite others to do the same. This resource is available to anyone and is sculpted to level-set the language and understanding around systemic racial inequality.

Another opportunity to engage in the conversation of environmental justice is to join us at the 2020 Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit, which will feature a keynote, plenary and breakout sessions relevant to racial equity and environmental justice. The event kicks off tomorrow evening and runs August 5-7.

All around, I’m encouraged by the engagement and leadership of our Members, Professional and Community Partners.  Our impact teams and volunteers are working rigorously to build support for the Members. In a time of rebuilding of our economy, our community and our health, I want to take a moment to thank all of those that are helping Cincinnati be one of the fastest growing and most active Districts nationally.

Member Spotlight: CAC Leading the Way!

The Contemporary Arts Center’s leadership in our community comes from the many environmental exhibitions held at the facility, their data collection, and most importantly, their willingness to share their story! As the first Founding Member of our District, the CAC offers the story of their journey to meet the ambitious goal to reduce energy use by 50% by 2030.

"Joining the 2030 District gave the CAC a way to demonstrate their commitment to the environment. Although, the goals are lofty the requirements to get started are easy."  - Chuck Lohre

Chuck Lohre, CAC Trustee and volunteer, and Dave Gerding of the CAC graciously shared a step-by-step guide to the process of reporting their energy and water. You can find it linked on the CAC's profile in our District Library.
