SUMMARY:Winter Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Chase away the winter blues with us! You may attend one\, two\, or all three workshops. Please register for each one individually. All ages and abilities are invited to participate! \nThis is a great opportunity for scouts\, families\, seniors\, and individuals. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. \nMILK JUG GREENHOUSES\nSat.\, Jan 25\, 2025\, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm\nWe will sow native seeds in upcycled milk jugs that we will turn into greenhouses. All supplies will be provided. We will have enough empty\, clean milk jugs for each registrant to make one greenhouse but if you have extras\, feel free to bring them and you will be welcome to use any leftover soil and seeds that we have. You may take home your greenhouses or choose to leave them with us to be planted in the parks in spring. \nGARDENING FOR BIRDS\, BUTTERFLIES\, AND BEES\nSat.\, Feb 22\, 2025\, 10:00 am – 11:30 am\nBased on the research of Doug Tallamy\, we will learn why native plants are the best option for sustaining our local wildlife. There will be a special focus on easy-to-grow plants that thrive in southwest Ohio and provide excellent habitat for birds\, butterflies\, bees\, and other pollinators. Free seeds will be included! \nINTRO TO COMMUNITY SCIENCE PROJECTS\nSat.\, Mar 22\, 2025\, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm\nCommunity Science (also known as Citizen Science or Participatory Science) allows people of all backgrounds and ages to contribute to scientific discovery. By using crowd-sourcing strategies\, professional scientists compile and analyze data submitted from around the world to identify patterns and trends. Programs we may touch upon could include iNaturalist\, eBird\, Project Feeder Watch\, MonarchWatch.org\, Project Bud Burst\, ODNR’s Stream Quality Monitoring\, and more! If you have one you are particularly interested in learning about\, drop us a note so we can include it! Some of these programs have phone apps that help users report data. Feel free to install them ahead of time if you would like. If you don’t have a smart phone\, no problem!

SUMMARY:NYE Volunteer Honeysuckle Pull

You may want to pack along towels and a change of clothes and footwear just in case. Bring gloves and/or pruners if you have them; we will have some to lend out as well. \nNo need to register; just show up ready to work! SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Bird Walk (part of Audubon's Christmas Bird Count)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Playground Shelter in the middle of Landen-Deerfield Park for a leisurely stroll to observe and document local bird species on the Winter Solstice. Our tallies will be included in the 125th annual National Audubon Society’s “Christmas Bird Count\,” and will contribute to long-term bird population monitoring efforts. This is North America’s longest-running community science project! \nOur walk will cover paved paths around the pond and parking lot tree line as well as on the natural surface multi-use trails through the woods and along the creek at the back of the park. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. We may encounter snow and/or mud. Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them. \nWhether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out\, we welcome everyone! The event should last around 1 hour\, depending on how many birds we see and hear. Open to all ages. Children 15 and younger should be accompanied by a guardian. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: https://secure.rec1.com/OH/warren-county-oh/catalog?filter=c2VhcmNoPTM0NDMyODk=
