She has worked at Cincinnati Public Radio for about four years and previously worked in public radio and television in Lincoln\, Nebraska and in Bloomington\, Indiana. Becca has earned numerous awards for her reporting\, including from the Heartland Emmys\, local chapters of the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists\, and contributed to regional and national Murrow Award winners. SUMMARY:Archeology Includes Everyone: Exploring the People of Our Past
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sierra Club Miami Group’s Educational Forum for an expedition to the Archeological Research Institute (ARI) 10 AM\, September 20\, 2025. Participants in this ARI event will meet at their location on 126 West High St.\, Lawrenceburg\, Ind. (a half hour drive from Cincinnati) where Program Director Samy Norris will give us an introduction to archaeology and the work of ARI. We will then be divided into groups and shuttled to current excavation sites in the Ohio River Basin (Carriage House Farm and/or Lost Bridge Brewing Company). We will work alongside ARI’s field research team exploring the world of experimental archaeology through different research projects. Participants will be shuttled back to their cars in approximately 2 hours. \nAll participants must complete an ARI waiver – click here to complete the waiver. \nThe event will be mostly outdoors and will occur rain or shine\, so please dress for the weather and for bugs. A donation of $10 per person is requested for ARI.

DESCRIPTION:Come spend the day with us on a beginners paddling trip on the Little Miami! You must be a good swimmer and wear a PFD while on the water (Inflatable PFD’s are not permitted). \nWe would like to limit the paddlers to those who have not been out with us before (at least this year). All are permitted and encouraged to sign up but if you have been with us before\, we will put your name on the not going list until Aug 20. At that time\, I will fill out the going list with as many as possible from the not going list. I appreciate this is a little unorthodox\, but we are trying to give new people an opportunity. \nWe will meet at the river access on Rt. 350 near Fort Ancient at 9 AM and shuttle the cars from there. The trip should be 8 miles or so. Bring a lunch. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Backpacking Weekend at Big South Fork NRRA
DESCRIPTION:Join Sierra Club for a winter backpacking trip through the rugged Honey Creek at Big South Fork National River and Recreation area in Tennessee. The hike is from Jan. 18 through Jan. 20 2025 (Martin King Weekend). We meet at the trip leader’s home ( Jay Freeman 7291 Ridge Rd.\, Cincinnati) and you may arrange carpooling from there. The hike will start and end at Leatherwood Ford\, and from there we hike 4-5 miles to the Honey Creek Loop (this trail does not show up on older maps) and base camp. Sunday we day hike the loop and hike out on Monday. Honey Creek loop is a strenuous hike\, but we will be without packs. \nYou MUST register in advance for this trip on Meetup. There is no charge for this outing\, however you must provide your own food\, equipment and share gas costs. We practice Leave No Trace\, and all Sierra Club Outings Leaders are trained in outdoor leadership and Basic First Aid / CPR. The compounds are called “forever chemicals” because they degrade very slowly and accumulate over time both in the environment and in people. \nNow\, communities throughout the United States and Ohio are at risk from exposure to these forever chemicals. In fact\, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that up to ten percent of the nation’s public drinking water systems may have levels of PFAS contamination that exceed new federal standards. For example\, one of the two Greater Cincinnati Water Works plants has levels that exceed federal standards\, as do nearby plants in Indian Hill\, Loveland and Milford. \nJoin us on Thursday\, November 7\, 2024\, to learn about what is being done to protect our communities against the risks of forever chemicals\, and about what you can do to help.
