SUMMARY:The Southwest Ohio 2026 Solar Co-op: Everything you want to know about going solar!
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Club Miami Group November Education Forum \nWhen: Monday Nov 2\, meet and greet 6:30 PM\, discussion 7-9 PM\nWhere: Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church\, Geier Room\, 103 William Howard Taft Road\, Cincinnati. Parking available behind church. \nPresented by Nikki Vandivort\, Clean Energy & Climate Resilience Manager\, City of Cincinnati – Office of Environment & Sustainability\, and Mryia Williams\, Ohio Program Director of Solar United Neighbors \nElectricity prices continue to soar\, but what can you do about it? Consider going solar through the Southwest Ohio 2026 Solar Co-op! The City of Cincinnati has teamed up with nonprofit partner Solar United Neighbors (SUN) and the City of Dayton to offer this program to residents across Southwest Ohio to help folks go solar with the guidance of the subject matter experts from SUN. \nWhat’s a solar co-op? Imagine getting hundreds of folks together and putting out a bid announcement to solar installers saying “We want to go solar. What deal can you give us?” Through this bulk purchasing approach\, the selected solar installer gets a lot of business and is able to offer the solar co-op members a discounted rate for their systems – usually about 10-20% cheaper than if they were to go solar on their own. Along the way\, SUN provides rooftop assessments\, education\, and is there to answer all the questions. They get paid a flat fee and are there to ensure co-op members have an easy solar purchasing experience with a vetted installer. \nCome find out all about the solar co-op\, what going solar entails\, and more. Bring your questions!\nYou’re welcome to attend in person\, or join us via Zoom here.

SUMMARY:Creating a Permaculture Planet: Mutualistic Design\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Sierra Club September Educational Forum\, featuring Braden Trauth\, Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at UC College of Design\, Architecture\, Art and Planning\, as he continues his presentation on Mutualism. \nWhen: Tuesday\, Sep 8\, meet and greet 6:30 PM\, discussion 7-9 PM\nWhere: Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church\, Geier Room\, 103 William Howard Taft Road\, Cincinnati. Parking available behind church. Or register to join via Zoom here.  \n“Mutualism” is when organisms benefit all others. Permaculture Design can help empower humans to heal ecological destruction while providing for the needs of all living beings all at the same time. Mutualistic Design builds on both concepts by focusing on guiding humans to enhance the Earth’s productivity of our primary producers (plants) through diverse resilience and systems design\, while mimicking them in our built environments and products\, enhancing energy and resource independence. Humans are most impactful “Keystone Species” on Earth. In this talk\, we will explore questions like: How can Permaculture be transformative? If we want to live more sustainably on Earth\, must we transition from being Consumers to being Producers? \nPart II of this discussion will include a consideration of how to manage our planet’s water systems during this crisis of climate warming with its increasing occurrence of flooding and draught\, surplus and scarcity. We will feature a local community project to manage our city’s archaic sewer system using green infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Cincinnati City Council's Climate\, City Services and Infrastructure Committee
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, August 4 at 10:00\, City Council’s Climate\, City Services and Infrastructure Committee is expected to vote on a Resolution\, sponsored by Council Member Meeka Owens and others\, supporting the rapid adoption and implementation of an impervious surface charge (ISC). \nSierra Club members will attend the meeting to speak in support of the resolution\, and to show support by their presence. Each additional supporter increases the chances that the ISC will become a reality. You can read Sierra Club Miami Group’s position paper on the ISC here. \nWe strongly support the ISC because it gives large landowners a financial incentive to keep their stormwater out of the sewers\, thereby reducing sewer overflows into rivers and streams and reducing sewer back ups into homes.

SUMMARY:Balcony Solar – You’ve heard the buzz\, now get the facts!
DESCRIPTION:When: Monday\, Aug. 3\, meet and greet 6:30 PM\, discussion 7-9 PM\nWhere: Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church\, Geier Room\, 103 William Howard Taft Road\, Cincinnati. Parking available behind church. \nWhat is balcony solar? Will it save me money? Is it safe? Is it legal? How does it work? Do I need a balcony? Where can I buy it? These are some of the questions people are asking about balcony solar.\nIn the last year\, 10 states have legalized balcony solar\, also called plug-in solar\, and many more states have legislation pending. It’s a hot discussion topic. Does the reality live up to the hype? \nJoin us for Sierra Club’s August Educational Forum where Larry Falkin and Nathan Alley will team up to demystify balcony solar. We’ll start with “show and tell”\, unpacking and setting up a balcony solar kit. We’ll address some of the technical and legal issues raised by balcony solar. Then it’s discussion time. Ask your questions. Share your perspective. Maybe there will be people in the audience who are already using balcony solar. We’d love to hear those stories. \nTo join via Zoom register here

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Educational Forum: Nuclear Energy\, Promoted by the AI Craze
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Fankhauser\, Professor emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati\, will discuss the history of environmental and health threats from the use of nuclear energy\, both military and domestic. High-tech oligarchic\, corporations\, flush with hundreds of billions of dollars\, are in the process of constructing trillions of dollars in data centers. In the process\, they are exploiting secret deals\, including surreptitious land purchases\, major tax abatements. \nBesides the disappearance of farmland\, these data centers place an extraordinarily high demand on electricity and consume large quantities of precious water. These are resulting in significantly higher\, electricity costs\, and concerns about water availability. \nOne of the “solutions“ these mega corporations offer is to resurrect the moribund nuclear industry. The underlining problem with the nuclear industry\, as always\, is the “silent but deadly“ problem of radioactivity. Its danger is raised at every stage of the fuel cycle\, whether mining and resulting tailings\, refining\, fabrication\, and especially the disposal of spent fuel for geological periods of time. \nDr. Fankhauser will present an illustrated discussion of the history of environmental and health threats from the use of nuclear energy\, both military and domestic. Special reference will be made to Fernald and Zimmer in Greater Cincinnati. \nPhoto courtesy Ellen Brenneman

SUMMARY:Chasing Waterfalls: A Backpacking Trip for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to confidently backpack in the outdoors! This trip is geared towards people with little to no backpacking experience. Please only sign up if you are new(ish) to backpacking or haven’t been in a long time and could use a refresh. \nIn this trip\, we’ll hike with all our gear no more than 5 miles per day on relatively flat trails\, coming across waterfalls\, rock shelters and a natural arch. Several experienced backpackers will be on hand to share backpacking tips\, so it’s a great beginner experience. \nWe will explore the Yahoo Falls area in the Big South Fork\, completing a counterclockwise loop along the Sheltowee Trace and Negro Creek trails. We’ll start at the Yahoo Falls trailhead and hike 5 miles on the first day\, then set up basecamp. On the second day\, we’ll dayhike to Princess falls\, about 4 miles roundtrip. We hike 5 miles on Negro Creek on the last day and head back to our cars. This is a beautiful hike with waterfalls and caves. \nWe’ll meet at Meijer in Florence and decide on carpooling. At Whitley City\, we’ll have a quick lunch (buy or bring your own) and will do the same on our drive back home. \nPlease reach out with any questions if you have not backpacked before\, if you’re not sure what to bring\, or are in need of gear. There are resources available to borrow some gear. \nNo dogs. You must register on Meetup to participate. All participants will need to sign a liability waiver. It’s also suggested you carry a completed medical form in case of emergency.

SUMMARY:Living Well in the Post-Growth Era: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the March Sierra Club Miami Group Education Forum\, “Living Well in the Post-Growth Era: A Small-Group Discussion” \nWhen: March 2\, 2026 – 7-9 pm\nWhere: Mt\, Auburn Presby Church (Geier Rm)\, 103 Wm Howard Taft Road\, 45219. \nPanel: Larry Falkin\, Susan Sprigg\, and Tom Brian (WorldWatch Institute) \nWhat will happen when the economy\, energy use\, and human population\, all stop growing? Most Americans think that growth is essential for their well-being. They worry about the dangers of stagnation. Others believe that unrestrained growth on a finite planet is the root of all that ails us. This debate pits flawed conventional economics against ecological constraints. \nWhether you think it’s good or bad\, we know that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. A “Post-Growth” economy prioritizes human well-being\, ecological sustainability\, and equitable resource distribution\, over growth. \nFree Parking behind church. SUMMARY:“Untangling Plastics” The Missing Link in Mitigating Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Club Miami Group Educational Forum is pleased to welcome Bob Gedert\, past president of the National Recycling Coalition and author of the new book – Untangling Plastics: The Missing Link in Mitigating Climate Change. Bob draws from his 45-year career in the recycling industry and his recent research to reveal the misguided mindsets that have led the movement for sustainability. His book is a comprehensive investigation of the manufacturing\, proliferation\, and disposal of plastics – their harmful impacts on the environmental and human health. \nMost people consider plastic consumer items and packaging as beneficial and generally inert or harmless. Yet the plastic in our household products are made from hundreds of chemicals originating from petrochemical factories that also produce oil and gas. \nIn his talk\, Bob will explain how consumers have actually been complicit in causing these harmful impacts. How can we untangle ourselves from our plastic habit and adopt greener ways of living? \nSierra Club Miami Group Education Forum Series\n7 PM Monday\, Jan. 5\, 2026\nMt.
