SUMMARY:Oxbow Birdathon 2025
DESCRIPTION:Birdathon begins at 5:00 p.m. sharp on Friday and ends at 5:00 p.m. sharp on Saturday. After 24 hours of birding\, the Birdathon Tally and Party begins. Plenty of cold drinks\, pizza and other food are provided before the Grand Tally begins and our combined bird sightings are revealed. This year’s Birdathon Tally will be held at the Fernald Preserve Visitors Center. The Fernald Preserve entrance is located at 7400 Willey Road\, about half a mile west of State Route 128\, in Crosley Township in Northwestern Hamilton County (map and directions). There is ample parking\, and it is centrally located to many of the best birding sites (including Fernald itself) on the west side of town. \nOxbow of Indiana wants as many birdwatchers as possible to participate in the Birdathon. While there is a basic competition for the most species seen in the Birdathon area for 24 hours\, there are other ways to compete. Here are some possibilities: \nIf not the entire Birdathon area\, then a portion\nMost Species seen: in one state\, in one county or a river watershed-maybe it is a small area\nMost Species in One Location: like the Oxbow\, back yard\, or a big sit\nMaybe the type of team\nMost Species seen: by a family\, a group under the age of 20\, a school class\nMaybe a special category you come up with\nMost money raised: by a team\, an individual\, a class\nMost birds seen without using fossil fuel\, while building a deck\, taking the kids for a hike\nMost birds photographed\nCreate your own category. If it has anything to do with counting bird species in the Birdathon’s 24-hour time window we will likely accept it. \nThe only cost of $5.00 per person registration fee which gets you pizza\, snacks\, drinks and other goodies at the Tally party. Register as a team or an individual participant for the Oxbow Birdathon by using the Registration Form on page 11.  Send your completed registration form with payment to Oxbow\, Inc.\, P. O. Box 4172\, Lawrenceburg\, IN  47025 as early as possible. (please make checks payable to Oxbow of Indiana\, Inc.) Still have questions? Please call Meg at 812-290-2941. \nHelp us celebrate the Oxbow\, its birds and conservation with our birding community.

SUMMARY:Spring Migration
DESCRIPTION:By late April\, spring migration in general is near peak and a great diversity of avian species should be present in the Oxbow area. Additionally\, many woodland and wetland plants and wildflowers will be in bloom adding their beauty to the natural scene. \nErich Baumgardner\, our trip leader\, is a skilled birder with an interest in all aspects of nature. He is also a long-time Oxbow Inc. advocate and current board member and knows the Oxbow exceptionally well. \nDucks\, herons and egrets\, shorebirds\, terns & gulls\, raptors\, migrant & returning summer songbirds (including several warblers) are all expected on this date. Erich’s plan will depend on the weather\, but he expects to cover a few spots in the Oxbow and maybe a stop at Lost Bridge. If time permits\, Erich may also work our way over to Shawnee Lookout to take full advantage of the diverse bird life moving through the area. Much of this trip will be on foot with short drives from spot to spot\, but walking will be easy to moderate and at a birders pace. Be ready for muddy spots and dress warmly. Binoculars are necessary to see small birds. There are no restrooms in the Oxbow\, but they are available at Shawnee Lookout or nearby businesses. This morning trip that will end around noon. Contact Erich if you have any questions regarding this trip. \nA Motor Vehicle Permit (MVP) is required at Shawnee Lookout (Great Parks). The price of the annual MVP is $10 for Hamilton County residents and $16 for non-residents. Daily MVPs can also be purchased on day of visit for $5 each for Hamilton County residents and $8 each for non-residents.

SUMMARY:Spring Waterfowl Migration
DESCRIPTION:March in the Oxbow means ducks\, as spring waterfowl migration reaches its peak during March. The Oxbow has historically been a magnet for migrating birds\, especially for waterfowl. Other species of birds will be seen on this trip but it would be difficult to ignore the waterfowl during a March visit into the Oxbow area. \nThe term “waterfowl” implies species of the family Anatidae which includes ducks\, geese and swans. At least 34 species of waterfowl have been recorded in the Oxbow over the years and about 25 of those occur regularly. In addition to waterfowl migration\, many other signs of spring should be noticeable by this date. While It has become common to see Bald Eagles in the Oxbow area during any month of the year\, March still represents the peak of spring migration for Bald Eagles so seeing an eagle is more than likely. There’s also a good chance flocks of Sandhill Cranes and large concentrations of gulls may also be seen. Other early spring migrant water birds and songbirds will be present\, meaning a great diversity of species should be seen. \nShake off your cabin fever and join our trip leader Gary Stegner for this early spring morning visit. Gary\, a long time Oxbow advocate and experienced naturalist and birder\, knows the Oxbow area extremely well. He plans to lead us in and around the Oxbow looking for the diversity that early spring migration brings. \nMarch also brings rain and potential flooding to the Oxbow bottoms\, making some areas inaccessible . On the other hand\, flood waters open up new and temporary areas where waterfowl and other water birds can forage\, so Gary will adjust his plans on the day of the trip. Expect a little driving from spot to spot interspersed with some light walking. Dress for late winter and expect some mud on your shoes. This morning trip will end around noon. There are no restrooms in the Oxbow but they are available at nearby businesses. Feel free to contact Gary if you have any questions regarding this trip.

SUMMARY:Bobcats
DESCRIPTION:Bobcats with Dr. Shauna Weyrauch\, Sr. Lecturer\, Dept. of EEO Biology\, The Ohio State University at Newark \nZOOM ONLY—Register here. Registered participants will receive login information the afternoon of the event. \nBobcats are elusive\, charismatic\, and ecologically important carnivores.  Habitat loss and over-harvesting lead to their extirpation from Ohio by the mid-1800s\, but in recent years\, they have mounted a comeback.  Beginning in 2015\, Project Wild Coshocton (a research team at The Ohio State University Newark) began documenting the distribution of bobcats in east-central Ohio using trail cameras.  In this presentation\, learn about factors that have enabled bobcats to return\, their current status in the state\, the valuable role they play in ecosystems\, as well as efforts underway to improve habitat for bobcats.

SUMMARY:Water quality and dynamics at mouth of the Great Miami River and Lawrenceburg\, IN with Michael Miller
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM ONLY—register here. \nJoin us for a presentation from Michael Miller. \nFor the past 15 years\, the Citizens Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring program monitored E. coli\, nutrients\, and conductivity to show the linkage between the Ohio River\, the Great Miami River and the Whitewater River in modifying the chemistry of the lakes of Oxbow Inc. These ecosystems are dependent upon timing and magnitude of large discharge events on the GMR\, the Whitewater River\, and the Ohio River. Fish and macroinvertebrate composition depends on these flood events and the low water events in early autumn. Most of the big fish are present only during the winter-spring floods\, leaving the small fish as the food for the fish-eating birds: the white pelicans\, white egrets\, great blue herons\, green herons and kingfishers.

SUMMARY:Fall Migration in the Oxbow & ILPA Big Day Bird Survey with Ann Oliver
DESCRIPTION:Meet in the upper Oxbow parking lot at the main entrance to the Oxbow\nLeader: Ann Oliver\, (513) 307-0929\, annieobirder@yahoo.com \nJoin our field trip leader Ann Oliver for a beautiful fall morning in the Oxbow. Many different species of birds are abundant as they migrate during October. By this date\, waterfowl migration will be well underway\, and many other species are still on the move. Shorebirds\, various water birds\, raptors and a diversity of songbirds may be seen. The various habitats of the Oxbow and the lower Great Miami River valley are a great place to see the diversity of these migration patterns. \nAnn Oliver\, an exceptionally skilled birder who has birded all over North America and the world\, is on the board of the local Audubon Society. Ann has birded in the Oxbow area for years and knows the Oxbow area extremely well. Ann plans to lead us to several spots in and around the Oxbow\, seeking the “mixed bag” that fall migration can bring. There will be some walking on this trip\, but it will be level and at a birders pace. \nThe Indiana Land Preservation Alliance (ILPA) in conjunction with the Indiana Audubon Society has again invited Oxbow Inc. to participate in their Indiana October Big Day on this date. Many other Indiana land trusts will be participating in this statewide bird survey. We can help Ann keep track of all the species and numbers of individuals we find on our morning walk and then she will submit the results to ILPA. \nBinoculars are necessary to see birds well. Restrooms are available nearby but not in the Oxbow itself. October usually has beautiful weather but check the forecast and always expect mud in the Oxbow. Contact Ann if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Fall Migration: Warblers & Shorebirds
DESCRIPTION:September is the peak of fall migration for songbirds (especially warblers) and shorebirds. Many other species like early waterfowl\, long-legged waders\, terns\, raptors and more also migrate south in September.\nOur trip leader\, Jack Stenger\, an expert birder and naturalist\, has regularly birded in the Oxbow since the age of ten and has great knowledge of the area. Jack’s exceptional field skills will aid us in finding a great diversity of species\, which is the primary focus on this field trip. \nJack will begin this field trip at the Shawnee Lookout Park entrance. By mid-morning Jack will lead us to the Oxbow\, stopping at Lost Bridge over the Great Miami River along the way. We should find shorebirds (sandpipers & plovers) and wading birds in both the Lost Bridge and Oxbow area. These combined areas should provide a great morning of birding. Warblers and many other songbirds\, herons & egrets\, terns\, other water birds and hawks\, including Osprey & Bald Eagles\, are all likely to be found during this morning trip. We’ll walk a bit on this trip\, but at a comfortable birding pace. Binoculars are necessary to see birds. Restrooms are available at Shawnee Lookout. A Hamilton County Park Motor Vehicle Permit is required at Shawnee Lookout and can be purchased at the entrance. Please feel free to contact Jack if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Early Fall Migrant Shorebirds & Waders
DESCRIPTION:This evening field trip will focus on birds\, specifically early fall migrants through the Oxbow area. The southbound fall migration of shorebirds (sandpipers & plovers)\, long-legged waders (herons & egrets)\, and several other species will be underway. Most years the Oxbow area provides a good habitat for them\, and the Great Miami River usually has exposed sand bars too. \nWe also should find numerous Great Egrets and night herons. Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret\, while rare\, are possible. Purple Martins and other migrating swallows “stage” in large numbers in the Oxbow during August. Terns\, Osprey\, Bald Eagle\, and other early migrants are possible. Most of our summer residents are still present so we should find a good diversity throughout the evening. \nLeader Jay Stenger\, a skilled birder\, and well-rounded naturalist\, knows the Oxbow area inside and out. We will start at a couple of spots around Oxbow Lake and then wrap up the evening at Lost Bridge over the Great Miami River. We suggest bringing water\, sunscreen\, and insect repellant. Contact Jay if you have any questions. \nLeader: Jay Stenger\, (513) 910-2087\, jaystenger1@gmail.com ; \nCo-Leader: To be announced

SUMMARY:Summer Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:This general nature walk will visit the Oxbow\, which Dave\, an exceptional naturalist and expert level birder\, knows extremely well. \nAlong with the many breeding songbirds in the Oxbow\, we may see Bald Eagles\, Double-crested Cormorants and Black-crowned Night-Herons. July is the start of southward shorebird migration in the Oxbow area\, so we may see some shorebirds. Heron and Great Egret numbers will begin building and we may see rarer species of long-legged waders like Little Blue Heron or Snowy Egret. A great diversity of plants are found in the Oxbow. Amphibians\, such as frogs\, are at their peak in mid-summer. We should see many interesting plants\, birds\, dragonflies\, butterflies\, turtles and other wildlife. Dave will spend the morning walking around Oxbow and Osprey Lakes\, with short drives to change locations. Walking will be at a slow pace over flat terrain with stops to look at birds and plants. Dave may also take us to Lost Bridge to see what we can find along the Great Miami River and nearby ponds. \nWe suggest long pants and decent footwear. You may also want a hat\, water\, sunscreen and insect repellent. There are no restrooms in the Oxbow but there are nearby businesses with restroom facilities. If you have any questions feel free to contact Dave.

SUMMARY:Breeding Birds & Summer Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Erich Baumgardner\, 513-304-0697\, erichbaumgardner@gmail.com \nMeet: In the Hardintown Oxbow parking lot at the main entrance to the Oxbow (Google Oxbow Nature Conservancy for directions) \nJoin our trip leader Erich Baumgardner for a pleasant early summer morning walk which will emphasize the overall nature of the Oxbow area with a primary focus on breeding birds. Erich is a skilled birder with an interest in all aspects of nature. He is also a long-time Oxbow Inc. advocate and current board member and knows the Oxbow very well. \nDuring June birds are abundant\, with most all of them involved in nesting and breeding activities. Over a hundred species of birds regularly breed within the Oxbow area or in close proximity (Shawnee Lookout). On this trip we can expect to see or hear several species of water birds\, raptors\, including eagles\, and a host of songbirds including warblers\, vireos\, orioles\, tanagers\, flycatchers\, grosbeaks and buntings and lots more. June is also the peak singing period\, and the morning chorus of bird songs will be quite vocal\, giving us a great chance to track them down and get a look. \nErich plans to take a leisurely walk in the Oxbow\, not just looking for birds\, but for all the great diversity of other fauna and flora that the Oxbow is so rich in. Later in the morning Erich may move to other areas of the Oxbow area depending on reports closer to the date. \nMost of this trip will be on foot\, but walking will be easy to moderate and at a birders pace. The trip will end by noon. To ensure your comfort remember that June can be hot by mid-morning. Consider wearing a hat and bringing water\, sunscreen\, and insect repellent. Binoculars are necessary for seeing small birds. Restrooms are not available in the Oxbow but are available nearby. If you have any questions\, feel free to contact Erich.

SUMMARY:Early Spring Waterfowl Migration
DESCRIPTION:Early Spring Waterfowl Migration — Sunday\, February 18\, 2024—Time: 8:00 A.M.\nMeet: In the upper Oxbow parking lot at the main entrance to the Oxbow\nLeader: Luke Thies\, (937) 733-9325\, thiesluke997@gmail.com\nEarly spring waterfowl migration should be in full swing by this date and will be the primary focus of this trip. Many species of waterfowl migrate through the Oxbow in large numbers every spring. While some days are better than others\, there are always waterfowl present in the Oxbow area at this season. Late February is also a great time of the year to find large numbers of Bald Eagles in the Oxbow area. A diverse assemblage of other seasonal residents and early spring migrants should be found\, including hawks\, gulls\, grebes\, herons\, and numerous songbirds. Even Sandhill Cranes are possible.\nOur trip leader\, Luke Thies is an excellent birder and all-around naturalist. We should see a wide variety of birds and Luke plans to move around to several locations in the Oxbow area\, including Lost Bridge over the Great Miami River\, to improve our chances. These plans will depend on spring flooding\, a natural occurrence in the floodplain of the Oxbow\, which can attract large assemblages of waterfowl\, gulls and other water birds.\nShake off your cabin fever and join Luke for an interesting morning of wildlife viewing in the Oxbow. Mud and cold weather is guaranteed\, so dress appropriately and wear decent footwear. This morning trip should end before noon. There are no restrooms in the Oxbow but there are plenty of nearby businesses with restroom facilities. Feel free to contact Luke if you have any questions regarding the trip. \nThe Oxbow can be reached by going south on US Hwy 50 from the I-275 #16 exit. In about 200 yards\, turn left (east) at the edge of the Circle K (between the Circle K and Waffle House) and go over the levee to where the road Ts with a fence directly in front of you. Turn right and go to the Oxbow entrance sign. Turn left into the Oxbow. The upper parking area is immediately on the right. You may also search Google Maps for “Oxbow Nature Conservancy”.

SUMMARY:Annual Moonlit Evening Winter Walk — AKA Morris Mercer Memorial Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:One of Oxbow Inc.’s beloved founders\, Morris Mercer\, loved the night winter woods\, especially when there was snow on the ground. He and his good friend John Klein started this night walk in the Shawnee Lookout woodlands that overlook the Oxbow many years ago. Morris is no longer with us\, but John keeps Morris’s spirit alive by continuing this annual field trip\, which we refer to as the Morris Mercer Memorial field trip. If you are looking for a unique experience\, join John as he leads us on about a two-hour night walk around Shawnee Lookout Park. John\, an Oxbow Inc. board member\, and retired Land Manager for the Hamilton County Park District is the perfect guide. This date will be just after a full moon\, with a fair chance that owls\, deer and flying squirrels will be seen or heard. John will talk about the history of the Oxbow and the Shawnee Lookout area and also do a bit about stargazing. As always at some point\, John will pass out M & Ms to celebrate Morris’s memory.\nMeet John in the parking lot of the closed Shawnee Lookout Golf Course Clubhouse at 7:00 pm. The rangers will have the entrance gates open for us. Remember to dress warmly. While John\, like Morris\, would like a little snow on the ground\, severe weather will cancel this trip. If you are unsure if the trip is cancelled\, call John at (513) 304-2310. \nVisit the Shawnee Lookout website at http://www.greatparks.org/parks/shawnee-lookout\nDirections to Shawnee Lookout Park: Shawnee Lookout is located at 2008 Lawrenceburg Road\, North Bend Ohio 45052. To get there from I-275\, take Kilby Road Exit # 21. Turn right onto Kilby Rd and go to the light at US 50 and turn right. Go about 1.7 miles to Lawrenceburg Road and turn left at the light. Follow Lawrenceburg Road across the bridge (Lost Bridge) over the Great Miami River. Turn right at the stop sign and go about 1.5 miles to the entrance to Shawnee Lookout Park on the left. Follow the Park Rd to the Old Golf Course. A Motor Vehicle Permit (MVP) is required for all Hamilton County Parks. The price of the annual MVP is $10 for a Hamilton County resident and $16 for a non-resident. Daily MVP’s can be purchased for $5 each for Hamilton County residents and $8 for non-residents. If you don’t have a MVP don’t let that keep you home. You can always buy one from a ranger if necessary.

SUMMARY:Late Fall Migration in the Oxbow
DESCRIPTION:Some people think of November as a cold and dreary month but I think late autumn is a beautiful time of year with the subtle hues of the landscape interspersed with brilliant fall colors offering up a stark beauty. Against this backdrop our trip leader\, Gary Stegner\, an excellent naturalist and veteran birder\, will lead this morning visit to the Oxbow to help us find a diverse number of seasonal birds. \nWhen birders and naturalists think of the Oxbow during November\, the first thing that usually comes to mind is waterfowl\, which peaks in our region during November. The Oxbow offers a great refuge for them and waterfowl will be the primary focus of this trip\, but Gary will not ignore the many other species found here at this season. Bald Eagles are now present in the Oxbow area every month of the year\, but November is the peak of fall migration for this species\, so we may see several on this trip. Other species of hawks may also be seen as well as migrating Sandhill Cranes. Late migrant and winter songbirds should also be abundant and the weedy fields will abound with sparrows of many species. We can expect a diverse number of species as Gary plans to visit several spots in the Oxbow including the East property and maybe a stop at Lost Bridge over the Great Miami River. Join Gary for a beautiful morning visit to the Oxbow. \nThe Oxbow can be muddy this time of year and November weather can be cold & wet\, so prepare accordingly. Feel free to contact Gary if you have any questions. Leader: Gary Stegner\, (812) 667-6433\, garyandsally@hotmail.com
