The City’s Office of Environment & Sustainability is hiring a full-time Recycling Operations Technician to help make Cincinnati a cleaner, greener place. If you’re passionate about sustainability and want to make a difference in your community, we want to hear from you!
This employee will complete zero waste initiatives and planning that divert waste from landfills through material recycling, reuse, and reduction for City operations and residential, commercial, and industrial (i.e., customers, stakeholders, or public as applicable). Will perform a variety of duties in support of the City’s recycling programs such as responding to and processing non-emergency requests for City services, problem resolution, and/or general information pertaining to recycling collection, carts, and related matters.
Examples of Work Performed

- Responding to and processing non-emergency requests for City services, problem resolution, and/or general information pertaining to zero waste initiatives.
- Employees interact with stakeholders in person, by telephone, by e-mail or in writing while maintaining a high level of stakeholder satisfaction.
- Handle customer requests and complete service orders.
- Utilize the City’s customer service request system (CSR) and other software in performing these tasks.
- May work in a call center type setting designated for answering zero waste questions and proactively responding to service requests.
- Escalate uncommon and emergency requests to supervisor.
- Engage in stakeholder outreach and education to increase zero waste awareness.
- Engagement through communications by mailers, flyers, social media posts, newsletter articles, and webpage updates.
- Assist in conducting City facility waste audits.
- Assist in the procurement of waste diversion services.
- Assist in City-wide zero waste planning and staffing zero waste events.
- Use data to evaluate and recommend the best strategies for waste diversion.
- Research waste policies and programs from other jurisdictions and agencies and recommend best practices.
- Assist in identifying, applying, and implementing grants that support waste diversion efforts.
- Determines proper person or persons to dispatch for recycling container related service requests and dispatch them.
- Researches, analyzes, and resolves issues as needed with communications to appropriate vendors, stakeholders, or other City departments, and closes service tickets. Initiates additional investigations, as necessary.
- Engage in stakeholder outreach and education to increase zero waste awareness.
Interact with the public at outreach events. - Assign and scan recycling carts to addresses so that they are trackable inventory.
- Research waste policies and programs from other jurisdictions and agencies and recommend best practices.
- Assist in identifying, applying, and implementing grants that support waste diversion efforts.
- Help manage the inventory of City owned recycling carts, bins and parts.
- Help monitor recycling containers in the central business district and neighborhood business districts for proper signage, placement, and overflow.
- Deliver, monitor, and remove recycling containers at special events.
- Deliver and/or recover recycling containers to or from stakeholders by driving a 16-foot box truck or pickup truck, with lift gate, in the delivery or recovery process.

Deliver used recycling containers for cleaning and then make minor repairs if needed for purposes of re-deployment. - Help manage the resolution utilizing telephone, email, and other forms of communication.
- Manage budgets, inventories, and schedules.
- Operate appropriate computer equipment and utilize appropriate software.
Input appropriate data into computer system utilized. - Drive a 16-foot box truck and pickup truck along the alleys, private streets, roadways, and highways in a safe manner and in accordance with the laws of Ohio and Cincinnati.
- Load recycling containers onto the truck and deliver and/or remove them from stakeholders or other locations.
- Assign and scan recycling carts to addresses so that they are trackable inventory.
Operate hand-held scanners or mobile phone applications.
