SUMMARY:From Source to Sea: Assessing Macro- and Micro-Plastic Impacts in Life Cycle Assessments
DESCRIPTION:This upcoming webinar will examine how recent advances in life cycle assessment are closing long-standing gaps in the quantification of macroplastic and microplastic impacts. We will explore emerging methodologies such as the Plastic Footprint Network and MarILCA\, discuss how mismanaged waste and plastic leakage can now be integrated into LCAs\, and highlight why these developments matter for packaging sustainability and evolving regulations\, such as Oregon’s EPR program\, which incorporates mismanaged waste metrics into its LCA requirements.

SUMMARY:Meet A Greenspace at Shawnee Lookout!
DESCRIPTION:Join Green Umbrella’s Greenspace Alliance and Great Parks for a Meet A Greenspace Hike on Friday\, January 23rd\, from 3-4:30 pm at Shawnee Lookout! \nOnce home to the indigenous peoples who lived in this region for 10\,000 years\, Shawnee Lookout has since been converted to a golf course and\, more recently\, a park. The landscape is quite hilly\, with over 9\,000 feet of streams that were once buried by culverts during its time as a manicured lawn. Today\, due to the efforts of Great Parks and The Nature Conservancy\, these streams are being restored to the surface through a process called “daylighting”. \nIf you’re interested in learning about local restoration projects or simply want to get outside this winter\, join us for 1 mile hike to learn about the work happening at this historic site! This will be a strenuous and most-likely muddy hike\, as the restoration work will be midway through completion. Please wear proper clothing\, sturdy shoes that can handle mud and snow\, and bring your own water and snacks. \nParking is available at the former clubhouse\, located at 2008 Lawrenceburg Road\, North Bend\, OH\, 45052. \nIf you have any questions\, contact Greenspace Alliance Manager Claire Carlson at claire@greenumbrella.org. \nThe Greenspace Alliance would also like to thank its sponsors\, Duke Energy and the Cincinnati Wildflower Preservation Society\, for making these events possible.

SUMMARY:Winter Sowing Edible Companion Plants
DESCRIPTION:Winter Sowing is an easy\, low-cost gardening method of planting seeds in recycled containers during winter\, creating a mini-greenhouse for them. The seeds experience natural cold and moisture before sprouting in spring\, eliminating the need for grow lights and hardening off seedlings. \nOur Agriculture Specialist will teach the winter sowing method and common pitfalls to avoid. We’ll also learn why certain seeds are paired together and how they benefit each other as companion plants. Then\, we’ll plant seeds together and you’ll take home some ready-to-go winter sown seeds of your own! \nEach participant will sow two jugs and choose up to 4 varieties from the following seeds: Kale\, Beets\, Dill\, Oregano\, Chamomile\, Chives.

SUMMARY:Ladies Night Out: Exploring the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Bears\, Dogs and a Dragon are just a few of the winter constellations to discover as we explore the night sky at the famous Cincinnati Observatory in Mt. Lookout. On Saturday\, January 24\, from 6:00 – 7:45pm we start the evening with a brief presentation on navigating the wonders of space and “star-hopping” through the constellations. A tour of the oldest public observatory in the US would not be complete without showcasing two historic telescopes that are over 150 years old. Weather permitting\, we will head outside and use planispheres to guide us in finding the constellations. \nCost: $12 per person which covers the cost of the tour and a planisphere to take home with you. Only 5 spots left! Register online before 1/23.

SUMMARY:2026 Hauck Concert Series: Percussive By Nature
DESCRIPTION:Throughout our history\, humans have sought to connect with nature on a deep\, emotional level–and music is one way we do so. This touchpoint with the natural world can help us to reconnect to ourselves and others and to better comprehend the interconnectedness of our life on Earth. \nJust as nature and gardens offer a rich tapestry of sights\, sounds\, smells and textures that can inspire and engage our senses\, music captures our auditory sense through its melodies and rhythms\, creating a powerful emotional impact. Together\, the visual beauty of nature and the evocative power of music create a multi-sensory experience that is stimulating and deeply enjoyable. \nThat’s why we’re excited to collaborate with series curator Krista Cornish Scott\, local music professionals and the vast student talent coming through the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) to offer a four-part annual series of musical performances based around Hauck Botanic Garden and the CGC’s mission to build community through gardening\, education and environmental stewardship. This partnership will bring carefully curated\, place-based performances to the CGC audience while showcasing the wealth of musical talent in Cincinnati and offering CCM students and young professionals unique\, nature-focused opportunities to program and perform. \nOur first concert is PERCUSSIVE BY NATURE with Jacob Ottmer: \nNature reverberates with percussion–from rain on the roof to cicadas in the trees to a woodpecker hammering away in the distance. For this first performance in the 2026 Hauck Concert Series\, we’ll explore the interplay between human-made and natural percussion through unique works that range from literal to philosophical. \nRecent CCM graduate Jacob Ottmer will perform works such as Elainie Lillios’s “After Long Drought\,” in which different implements and electronic effects are used on the vibraphone to simulate being entrenched in a rainstorm; “Syntax of Snow” by Matthew Burtner\, which combines amplified snow\, a glockenspiel and an ambient soundtrack to evoke feelings of meditation in the composer’s home state of Alaska; and John Cage’s “Child of Tree\,” which features amplified plant matter and symbolically represents Cage’s idea that all things come from natural beginnings. \nBeer and wine will be available with a suggested donation.
