SUMMARY:Make and Take Elderberry Syrup Making at Long Branch Farm and Trails
DESCRIPTION:Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults. \nProgram Description: Humans have used elder for thousands of years. Modern scientific methods have revealed elder’s unique combination of antioxidants and reputed cold-fighting properties. Working in community and taking cues from nature\, you’ll learn by doing as you help transform our Long Branch Farm-grown frozen ripe elderberries into cold-fighting syrup. \nFrom start to finish\, we’ll take you through the process of making elderberry syrup. While it simmers (approximately 30 minutes)\, we’ll process more elderberries\, answer questions about growing native elder bushes in your yard\, discuss uses for finished elderberry syrup\, explore ideas for reusing “spent” elderberries\, and try some samples. We’ll send you home\, inspired\, with some finished elderberry syrup. \nWhat to Expect: This is a hands-on harvest and cooking class that takes place outside and/or in a non-air conditioned barn. \nWe will do some walking (not more than .5 mile) on level terrain. Dress for the weather.\nRestrooms are available throughout the program.\nThis program is mostly outdoors with indoor options available in the case of severe weather.\nProgram runs rain or shine.\nWhat to Bring: Water bottle. \nWhat to Wear: Please dress in “ok-to-get-dirty” clothes as we’ll be working with food. Wear sturdy shoes as we’ll be standing for much of the time. (Chairs available.) \nElderberry Syrup Ingredients: elderberries\, cinnamon sticks\, cloves\, ground ginger\, and honey. \nWhere to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. SUMMARY:Native Plants for Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:“Planting for pollinators” is an often-repeated mantra in the gardening community. But what\, exactly\, does that mean?\nSupporting pollinators goes beyond growing pretty flowers. It means providing host plants to support larvae\, habitat to shelter through winter and ecological gardening practices that encourage biodiversity. \nThis class will explore these topics\, plus dive deeper into the relationships between our native plants and the pollinators they depend on. All skill levels are welcome! We’ll start with a lecture\, then take a brief tour of the garden. You’ll leave with a list of recommended species as well as an understanding of what it takes to support pollinators through their entire lifecycles. \nINSTRUCTOR: Sam Settlemyre\, CGC Conservation Program Manager

SUMMARY:Living the Interconnected Life: Contemplation\, Ecology\,and the Spirit of Oneness
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Dr. Muhammad U. Faruque\, is the Inayat Malik Associate Professor of Islamic Philosophy and Environmental Studies at the University of Cincinnati\, and a former Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. \nIn this virtual program with Dr. Faruque\, we will explore “ecological living” as more than a set of sustainable practices\, and that it is rather a way of being that arises from a deep sense of interconnection with the universe. Drawing on the Sufi contemplative tradition\, Dr. Faruque will reflect on how inner transformation—through mindfulness\, presence\, and reverence—can cultivate a vision of wholeness and belonging. By reawakening to the sacredness of the Earth and the rhythms of the nonhuman world\, we begin to live in ways that are not only sustainable\, but spiritually rooted and ethically responsible. \nTo attend this virtual event\, please register here.

SUMMARY:Great Ohio River Swim
DESCRIPTION:The Great Ohio River Swim returns August 24! \nGet ready to take the plunge: The Bill Keating\, Jr. Great Ohio River Swim is coming up on Sunday\, August 24! \nThis exciting open water swim across the Ohio River is a fundraiser for Adventure Crew\, a local nonprofit that connects city teens with nature and each other through outdoor adventures. Participants enter the Ohio River at the Serpentine Wall in Downtown Cincinnati and swim to the Kentucky side of the river and back (approximately 900 meters) while the river is closed to motorized traffic. Registration is open on the event website. \n“The Great Ohio River Swim gets more and more popular every year\,” said Miriam Wise\, Adventure Crew’s director of support and engagement. “Many swimmers now see it as an annual ‘must-do’ summer challenge\, and others are excited to check crossing the Ohio off their Cincinnati bucket list. We appreciate the growing interest in the event – and the fact that every registration and sponsorship supports Adventure Crew’s mission of connecting city teens with nature and each other through outdoor adventures!” \nSwimmers who want to go the extra miles (literally) can participate as “Double Dippers.” This small group of participants will take a 2.5-mile swim downstream along the Ohio shoreline before joining participants in the traditional 900-meter course. Double Dippers are encouraged to raise $200 for Adventure Crew. Interested swimmers must apply online and be accepted to participate; registration for the Double Dip is currently full. \nThe Swim is named for Bill Keating\, Jr.\, one of the first swimmers to sign up for the inaugural event in 2007. (That first year\, he won the men’s swim but lost the overall title to his daughter\, Caroline Keating\, who now serves as the event chair.) He continued to be a huge supporter of the event until he lost his battle with brain cancer in 2017. \n“I’m so excited for another year of the Bill Keating Jr. Great Ohio River Swim\, which directly supports Adventure Crew and specifically their incredible swim program\,” Caroline Keating said. Now more than ever\, it’s critical to invest in the teens in our community\, and that’s exactly what Adventure Crew does. I know my dad would be proud to see how we’re honoring his legacy by building a stronger\, more connected future for our city’s youth.” \nOn the day of the event\, check-in opens at 7 a.m.\, with mandatory open water safety instructions at 8 a.m. and an 8:15 a.m. start. Double Dippers must be present by 6:15 a.m. to complete their 2.5-mile swim before joining the 900-meter course. Event registration is limited to the first 250 participants\, and the event is expected to sell out in advance. \nIf river conditions are uncooperative\, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday\, September 7. \nAdventure Crew connects city teens in Greater Cincinnati with nature and each other through outdoor adventures. Founded in 2013\, the nonprofit now serves all Cincinnati Public Schools high schools\, seventh and eighth graders in select CPS elementary schools\, and six schools in Northern Kentucky – a total of 27 schools and more than 900 students per year. Through challenging monthly adventures\, city teens develop the courageous spirit to step out of their comfort zone and discover new worlds – outside in nature and inside themselves. This deep connection to nature will set a positive course for their lives – and help create the next generation of environmental stewards. For more information\, visit www.adventurecrew.org.

SUMMARY:Space Exploration Class Series at the Cincinnati Observatory
DESCRIPTION:eSpace Exploration Series\nClass level: Introductory – This class series is recommended for guests of any background. \nTickets:\nNon-members $25 per class or $65 for 3-class series\nMembers $20 per class or $50 for 3-class series\nStudent (with valid ID) $10 per class or $25 for 3-class series \nThe Voyagers\nTuesday\, August 12th\, 7-8:30PM \nVoyager 1 and 2 are responsible for a revolution in our understanding of the outer Solar System. The twin spacecraft\, launched in 1977\, were tasked with exploring the gas giant planets and their moons\, revealing dynamic and mesmerizing worlds along the way. This class will take a look at these groundbreaking missions\, including how the Voyager craft are still being used by NASA in the present day. \nGalileo at Jupiter\nTuesday\, August 19th\, 7-8:30PM \nIn 1995\, the Galileo spacecraft was deployed from the Space Shuttle Atlantis\, destined to become the first spacecraft to orbit a planet in the outer Solar System. During roughly 8 years spent at Jupiter\, Galileo revealed unprecedented detail in the jovian atmosphere\, as well as an up close look at the fascinating Galilean moons. Join us to learn about what Galileo was able to uncover about the largest planet in our Solar System. \nCassini at Saturn\nTuesday\, August 26th\, 7-8:30PM \nLaunched in 1997\, the Cassini spacecraft would become the first to orbit Saturn and went even further by including the Huygens probe\, the first lander destined for the moon of another planet\, Titan. For well over a decade\, Cassini was able to examine the planet\, its rings\, and its menagerie of moons\, while the Huygens lander provided images and measurements of the foreign yet familiar surface of Titan. Learn about the ringed planet from Cassini’s perspective in this class!
