SUMMARY:Heritage Walk: Architecture & Landscape of the Former Krippendorf and Groesbeck Estates
DESCRIPTION:Program Description: The Rowe Woods property boasts two estates that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Join us for a 2.5-hour docent-led walking tour of both the interior and exterior of the homes built in the early 20th century by Carl Krippendorf and Grace Groesbeck. By exploring architectural style\, horticulture and landscape design\, we’ll see the ties between the two families\, how they both sought to blend the natural world with the designed human world with influence from the British designer Gertrude Jekyll\, and how their efforts set the stage for the property that would become Cincinnati Nature Center. \nNote: Knowledgeable docents will be available in and around both Krippendorf Lodge and Groesbeck Estate to share stories of the history of this unique place and answer your questions. This experience includes a revealing 20-minute guided walk between the two historic homes. Participants may opt to drive between the two homes. A full Heritage Walk will take about 2.5 hours. \nExperience a special viewing of the family homes at both estates\, normally not open to the public.\nDeepen your understanding of the land by learning about what happened in the past.\nHear stories of the Krippendorfs and Groesbecks within the context of the history of the Cincinnati area.\nEnjoy light refreshments while viewing artifacts from our colorful history.\nDiscover the history in objects that you might have walked by 100 times while hiking the trails.\nWhere to Meet: Registrants will be emailed regarding the starting location (Krippendorf Lodge or Groesbeck Estate) before the program. (4949 Tealtown Rd.\, Milford\, OH 45150) \nCost: Ticket fees include daily admission.

SUMMARY:Nature Based Mindful Eating
DESCRIPTION:Program Description: Nature provides us with clues as to how to eat\, but we need to slow down and pay attention to our own internal senses. Hone your own body’s nutritional wisdom and your connection to nature as we blend mindful exercises with natural history\, food tasting\, hands-on activities\, and short walks to forage. In this experience\, we’ll: \nlead you through mindfulness exercises to help you to pay attention to your internal senses\, thoughts\, emotions\, and triggers that we normally don’t notice during the seemingly ordinary act of eating.\nfocus our attention on all our senses as we eat.\nexplore the difference between being full and being fully satisfied.\npay attention to our body. Our body craves what it needs but also becomes averse to what it doesn’t need.\ntouch on the value of eating a broad array of foods and the importance of phytochemical richness.\ntake a naturalist perspective as we learn how wild plants moderate how much animals eat from them and what this tells us about our own nutritional wisdom.\nAbout the Program Guides: Cathy Cebulski Sacco M.Ed. is an experienced mindfulness teacher with over 20 years of personal practice. She is trained and qualified to teach the evidenced eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course (MBSR) through The Mindfulness Center at Brown University\, and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center where Jon Kabat-Zinn created this MBSR stress reduction course. She also teaches the Mindful Self Compassion course\, Koru Mindfulness\, and is a certified Mindful Schools teacher. She integrates her experience from these evidence-based trainings into the workshops and custom programs she offers. She has had a personal meditation practice for the past 20 years. \nA 30-year veteran of Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC)\, Jason Neumann currently serves as public programs manager\, crafting experiences that immerse visitors in nature and leading interpretive trainings. He works towards translating CNC’s “plant native” initiative into visitor engagement opportunities and has a special interest in using foraged food to connect people to Nature. Growing up on a small farm sparked his deep interest in agriculture which was fanned to flame through a BS degree in Crop and Soil Sciences (Michigan State University)\, and later a graduate certificate in Agroforestry (University of Missouri – Columbia). Drawing from the perspective of a farmer/naturalist\, he advocates for working with nature whether in his own yard\, working with volunteer groups\, crafting conservation programs\, or managing the native perennial polyculture plots and native 2-acre pawpaw grove at Long Branch Farm & Trails. \nWhat to Expect: In this mindful eating experience\, we’ll serve small bites of a handful of curated foraged foods as well as select store bought items. A veteran mindfulness instructor will facilitate mindful attention\, slow looking activities\, reflection\, and discussion. \nPlan to be outside (but we will have access to a cooled indoor space in the event we have extreme summer heat or storms).\nProgram runs rain or shine.\nTrails/areas used during this program are rated as Level ground for a planned distance of no more than .5 mile at a slow pace.\nRestrooms are available throughout the program.\nWhat to Bring: Bring your water bottle. \nWhat to Wear: Hiking shoes or gym shoes are recommended. \nWhere to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Krippendorf Terrace at our Rowe Woods location. (4949 Tealtown Road\, Milford\, OH 45150) \nCost: Ticket fees include daily admission.

SUMMARY:Homegrown Cannabis
DESCRIPTION:With the passage of Issue 2 in November of 2023\, home gardeners can now try their hand at growing Cannabis sp. Since this crop can require a significant investment on the part of the grower\, it’s important to learn best practices before starting out. \nThis course will cover the botany of Cannabis sp.\, the process of how to successfully grow it either indoors or outside and tips from our expert instructors. You’ll walk away with a list of supplies\, an understanding of next steps to take should you choose to embark on a new adventure and grow Cannabis sp. at home\, and the tools to tackle the final tasks of production as your crop reaches maturity. The class will include time for questions. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nSome of the legalities of growing this crop have not been finalized and it is the responsibility of each participant to research and follow all regulations according to the law.\nThe Civic Garden Center and its staff does not provide any legal advice\, and all inquiries will be directed to local and state legislatures.\nParticipants in this class must be at least 21 years old. We will check IDs during class check-in as needed. \nINSTRUCTORS: Stephanie Fransen & Mary Dudley

SUMMARY:25 Communities Project Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of the 25 Communities Project on July 22nd! \nAt Green Umbrella\, we see a bright future for our region\, one that is thriving and resilient to the effects of a changing climate. We envision: \n\nCommunities with beautiful greenspaces that clean the air\, cool our neighborhoods\, reduce flooding\, and bring people together.\nCommunities that are energy efficient and powered by renewable energy to reduce costs and pollution.\nCommunities with green schoolyards that create shade and outdoor learning experiences for kids\, including opportunities to grow their own food.\nCommunities connected to a regional food system with accessible and nutritious food\, minimal waste\, and local food production and processing capacity that shelters us from food system disruptions.\n\nGreen Umbrella is launching the 25 Communities Project\, an initiative that will bring twenty-five new communities into the movement towards a resilient\, equitable and thriving region. This ambitious and exciting project will bring the resources\, skills\, tools\, and collaborative connections Green Umbrella has developed over the past 26 years to help historically disinvested communities reduce emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change. \nCommunities that are historically disinvested are more vulnerable to climate change impacts. These communities are more likely to have outdated infrastructure susceptible to extreme weather events\, fewer green spaces\, higher temperatures\, poorer air quality\, and fewer resources to recover after extreme events. The 25 Communities Project will help these communities access the resources\, funding opportunities\, and technical support they need to take action on their most pressing climate-related challenges and to help them build more resilient\, equitable\, and thriving communities. \nProgramming for the cohort of 25 Communities will begin in July 2025 and continue through August 2026. \n\nOnly local governments are eligible to officially sign up for the 25 Communities Project BUT community partners are key to this work and there will be opportunities to collaborate throughout the project. So we strongly encourage community organizations and advocates to join this kickoff to learn how to work with your government and encourage them to engage with the project.\nYour community must be located in one of the following counties: Boone Co. KY\, Butler Co. OH\, Campbell Co. KY\, Clermont Co. OH\, Dearborn Co. IN\, Franklin Co. IN\, Grant Co. KY\, Hamilton Co. OH\, Kenton Co. KY\, Warren Co. OH.\n\nParticipating communities will receive monthly offerings tailored for the cohort including trainings\, workshops\, consultations\, and direct project technical assistance from Green Umbrella staff and regional/national partners\, community event support\, working group access\, cohort convenings\, and media coverage. Any staff from participating local governments can attend events and leverage available resources. \nThe 25 Communities will also be eligible for a 2026 Climate Action Fellow during Summer 2026. Our fellowship pairs undergraduate or graduate students and individuals who want to pivot careers into the climate space with Green Umbrella members to develop practical plans and solutions for a changing climate. \nRegister for The 25 Communities Kickoff today — space is limited!  \nTo learn more or officially sign up for the Project\, email van@greenumbrella.org.

SUMMARY:Herbal Bundle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the rich history of plants used to clear and purify spaces with aromatic smoke\, known as smudging\, saining and saging in a variety of cultures. You’ll see different types of aromatic plants growing in the garden\, watch a demonstration of how to craft a bioregionally appropriate herbal bundle\, then craft your own herbal bundle to take home. All materials provided. Herbal iced tea served during class. \nMEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Local herbalist Meghan Henshaw has spent many years studying the plethora of ways in which medicinal plants are woven into the fabric of everyday life. This has led her all over the United States and abroad to Morocco\, England\, Mexico\, and Italy where she has worn many hats as a field researcher\, wildcrafter\, herbalist\, and educator. \nHer medicinal plant studies began with an internship with a large herb company twenty years ago and was followed by formal botanical study at numerous universities\, resulting in degrees in herbal science and ethnobotany\, the academic study of how people use plants. She currently works as an editor for the American Botanical Council\, makes small batch herbal products\, provides herbal support to her clients\, and teaches locally about medicinal plants. \nMeghan is passionate about herbalism being accessible to all and is inspired by the plethora of radical projects and people actively working to decolonize herbalism (and the world) in boldly creative and joyful ways. She is especially interested in social equity and sustainability in the herbal supply chain and endangered medicinal plants found in the Midwest region. \nFor more information\, please check out https://www.ocotilloherbals.com/
