This gripping documentary exposes the global crisis of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” — and the corporate and regulatory failures that allowed them to spread. \nThe evening begins with a reception (6:30–7:00 PM) featuring drinks by Rhinegeist and HighGrain and lite bites by Kate’s Catering. \nA post-film discussion (8:30–9:00 PM) will feature renowned environmental attorney and Taft partner Robert Bilott (the real-life inspiration behind Dark Waters)\, Greater Cincinnati Water Works Superintendent of the Water Quality and Treatment Division Jeff Swertfeger\, and Ohio River Basin Alliance chair Chris Lorentz. \n \n  \n\nRob Bilott is a leading voice in the fight against PFAS pollution who has spent over three decades holding polluters accountable and advocating for clean water. His legal battle against DuPont is chronicled in the book Exposure\, and his work is featured in the films Dark Waters\, The Devil We Know\, and How to Poison a Planet. Rob is a recipient of the International Right Livelihood Award—also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize.”\nJeff Swertfeger serves as the Superintendent of the Water Quality and Treatment Division at Greater Cincinnati Water Works. In this role\, he oversees the delivery of high-quality drinking water from source to tap. His responsibilities encompass water treatment at the utility’s two major plants and the distribution of water throughout the Greater Cincinnati region.\nDr. Chris Lorentz is a Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Environmental Science Program at Thomas More University\, and serves as Director of the Center for Ohio River Research & Education at the University’s Biology Field Station. He is also the Chair of the Ohio River Basin Alliance\, a non-profit organization working to set water resource priorities for the Ohio River Basin\, to sustain healthy ecosystems and communities\, and improve our water-dependent economies.\n\nThis special screening is sponsored by Taft Law.\nTo inquire about sponsorship opportunities\, contact: charlie@greenumbrella.org \nThank you to Cincinnati World Cinema for donating 100% of ticket sales to support Green Umbrella‘s work to create a thriving and resilient Greater Cincinnati.

SUMMARY:Heritage Walk: Architecture & Landscape of the Former Krippendorf and Groesbeck Estates
DESCRIPTION:Program Description: The Rowe Woods property boasts two estates that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Join us for a 2.5-hour docent-led walking tour of both the interior and exterior of the homes built in the early 20th century by Carl Krippendorf and Grace Groesbeck. By exploring architectural style\, horticulture and landscape design\, we’ll see the ties between the two families\, how they both sought to blend the natural world with the designed human world with influence from the British designer Gertrude Jekyll\, and how their efforts set the stage for the property that would become Cincinnati Nature Center. \nNote: Knowledgeable docents will be available in and around both Krippendorf Lodge and Groesbeck Estate to share stories of the history of this unique place and answer your questions. This experience includes a revealing 20-minute guided walk between the two historic homes. Participants may opt to drive between the two homes. A full Heritage Walk will take about 2.5 hours. \nExperience a special viewing of the family homes at both estates\, normally not open to the public.\nDeepen your understanding of the land by learning about what happened in the past.\nHear stories of the Krippendorfs and Groesbecks within the context of the history of the Cincinnati area.\nEnjoy light refreshments while viewing artifacts from our colorful history.\nDiscover the history in objects that you might have walked by 100 times while hiking the trails.\nWhere to Meet: Registrants will be emailed regarding the starting location (Krippendorf Lodge or Groesbeck Estate) before the program. (4949 Tealtown Rd.\, Milford\, OH 45150) \nCost: Ticket fees include daily admission.

SUMMARY:Make Elderflower Syrup from scratch at Long Branch Farm
DESCRIPTION:Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults. \nProgram Description: Called “summer in a bottle\,” traditional European elderflower syrup dates back to Roman times. We’ll celebrate our own American elder as we hand harvest honey-scented elderflowers and walk you through the entire process of making elderflower syrup. You’ll head home with a pint of aromatic syrup\, instructions\, and our list of top ideas for using it. While we work\, we’ll explore elder’s value for wildlife and how to incorporate this native shrub into your own home landscape.\nElderflower syrup classes are scheduled in the mornings\, just after the dew dries. The plants have “recharged’ their blooms overnight\, assuring prime flower flavor for us. Note that elderflower syrup classes may be postponed if it rains. \nWhat to Expect: We’ll stay in close proximity to the Creekside barn\, venturing into a nearby native edibles plot to harvest elderflowers. \nTrails/areas used during this program are rated as accessible (packed gravel trails\, mild hills) for a planned distance of 0-.25 mile at a slow pace.\nThis program is mostly outdoors with indoor options available in the case of severe weather.\nProgram runs rain or shine.\nRestrooms are available throughout the program.\nWhat to Bring: A water bottle is strongly suggested.
