SUMMARY:Water quality and dynamics at mouth of the Great Miami River and Lawrenceburg\, IN with Michael Miller
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM ONLY—register here. \nJoin us for a presentation from Michael Miller. \nFor the past 15 years\, the Citizens Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring program monitored E. coli\, nutrients\, and conductivity to show the linkage between the Ohio River\, the Great Miami River and the Whitewater River in modifying the chemistry of the lakes of Oxbow Inc. These ecosystems are dependent upon timing and magnitude of large discharge events on the GMR\, the Whitewater River\, and the Ohio River. Fish and macroinvertebrate composition depends on these flood events and the low water events in early autumn. Most of the big fish are present only during the winter-spring floods\, leaving the small fish as the food for the fish-eating birds: the white pelicans\, white egrets\, great blue herons\, green herons and kingfishers.

DESCRIPTION:The book is “The Ice at the End of the World” by Jon Gertner\, and it was recommended to us by Torrey McMillan\, one of the founders of the Book Club. She read it in preparation for a trip to Greenland\, where she went to hike the Arctic Circle Trail and to see the evidence of climate change there. Torrey did a lot of reading in advance on the ice science\, Arctic cultures and early western exploration of Greenland. She will lead our discussion. This is a problem for the environment because conservation issues require shared understandings of problems and needs. From HOAs to zoning commissions to board rooms\, shared discourse is essential to being an effective citizen and advocate for nature. He will discuss the mechanics of solar eclipses: the how\, when\, and why of eclipses. He will explore some of the mythology surrounding eclipses including a connection to early Ohio history. In addition to the science of eclipses\, Dr. Fischer will outline some of the science discoveries that eclipses have made possible. Finally\, methods for safely viewing the upcoming eclipse will be discussed.
