Both are exciting opportunities to engage in meaningful food systems work in our region! \nWe will be holding an informational webinar on December 18\, 2025 at 11am\, where we will provide a high level overview of both opportunities and we will allocate the last 30 minutes to Q&A. \nFood Policy Council Members\nWe are looking to expand and engage new members on the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council (GCRFPC). We are seeking diverse applicants with varying perspectives\, experiences\, and representation across our regional food system! This includes across sectoral representation\, demographic diversity\, geographical and community representation\, and other unique perspectives or lived experiences. \nThe GCRFPC is a cross-sector collaborative of food system experts and advocates working together to advance an environmentally\, socially\, and economically resilient regional food system through policy and systems level work. She will be discussing the creation of podcast series followed by a Q&A session. \nBecca Costello is WVXU’s Local Government Reporter\, focusing primarily on Cincinnati City Hall. She has worked at Cincinnati Public Radio for about four years and previously worked in public radio and television in Lincoln\, Nebraska and in Bloomington\, Indiana. Becca has earned numerous awards for her reporting\, including from the Heartland Emmys\, local chapters of the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists\, and contributed to regional and national Murrow Award winners. DESCRIPTION:Preparing for environmental change is one of the most challenging issues facing local governments today. It is also one of the most important. Extreme weather and its impacts are complex and both global and local in scope. Reducing the worst impacts will require actions at global\, national\, state\, and local levels. Being prepared for the impacts of environmental change in our communities\, neighborhoods\, and farms\, however\, falls more directly on local governments. Some actions to become more resilient can be costly and difficult to implement\, but many will actually save money and can be readily integrated into ongoing government operations. Good information about a community’s vulnerabilities and solutions is key to reducing the worst impacts of changing conditions and increasing communities ability to deal with and recover from unavoidable impacts. \nThe Resilience and Preparedness Assessment training series through the 25 Communities Project will provide a succinct and logical roadmap of feasible actions city\, county\, town\, township\, and village governments in Ohio\, Kentucky\, and Indiana can take to prepare their communities and lessen anticipated impacts. Communities in our region are already doing many of the actions necessary; assessment approaches can help local governments think about how they can integrate resilience into community services already provided\, such as increasing street sweeping schedules\, addressing emergency flood response in Multi-hazard Mitigation Plans\, educating residents about heat related illness and prevention through the County’s health department or other outlets\, and many more. \nResilience and Preparedness Assessment 101 will introduce government staff to resilience principles\, assessment tools\, and initial strategies that can help create a specific roadmap for how your community can increase its preparedness. \nReach out to Van Sullivan with any questions at van@greenumbrella.org. \n

SUMMARY:Living the Interconnected Life: Contemplation\, Ecology\,and the Spirit of Oneness
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Dr. Muhammad U. Faruque\, is the Inayat Malik Associate Professor of Islamic Philosophy and Environmental Studies at the University of Cincinnati\, and a former Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. \nIn this virtual program with Dr. Faruque\, we will explore “ecological living” as more than a set of sustainable practices\, and that it is rather a way of being that arises from a deep sense of interconnection with the universe. Drawing on the Sufi contemplative tradition\, Dr. Faruque will reflect on how inner transformation—through mindfulness\, presence\, and reverence—can cultivate a vision of wholeness and belonging. By reawakening to the sacredness of the Earth and the rhythms of the nonhuman world\, we begin to live in ways that are not only sustainable\, but spiritually rooted and ethically responsible. \nTo attend this virtual event\, please register here.
