SUMMARY:Mutualistic Design: Creating a Permaculture Planet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sierra Club Educational Forum as we welcome Braden Trauth\, Assistant Professor Industrial Design at University of Cincinnati\, DAAP \nBraden will speak about his work experience and research in sustainable design with a focus on Sustainable Industrial Design\, which is founded in Permaculture and the ecological theory of the keystone species – a theory he pioneered in his Master’s Thesis. Braden has done extensive research in Permaculture Design\, Regenerative Farming\, and Agroecology\, Ecological Energy Theory\, natural and sustainable building\, and sustainable Industrial Design. With his colleagues\, he created the World’s first Regenerative Farming certification approved by the USPTO called Permaganic Authenticated\, which he is still scaling up. He co-founded the Cincinnati Permaculture Institute in 2008\, and he has lectured on Permaculture to the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture and national Agriculture Universities in Haiti. \nBraden continues to research design practices and processes that can help further sustainable/ mutualistic product design and the renewable and non-renewable resources\, manufacturing\, use and environments\, repair and disposal that products are created from and exist within. \nWhen: Monday\, February 2\, 2026\, meet and greet 6:30 PM\, discussion begins 7 PM.\nWhere: Mt. Register by January 12\, 2026. \nRecommended Audience: This program is available to adults and mature teens 16 and up; however\, only participants ages 18 and up who complete the course will receive certification through OSU. \nProgram Description: Cincinnati Nature Center is proud to be a host site and partner with Ohio State University Extension for this 40-hour educational course that encompasses the topics of Ohio’s watersheds\, aquatic life\, geology\, soils\, plants\, forests\, insects\, and animals (reptiles\, amphibians\, birds and mammals). \nEach topic is taught by experts and community stakeholders from across the region. \nTo receive certification\, upon completing the OCVN course participants must document 40 hours of volunteer service and/or continuing education at any Ohio organization with a compatible program mission. DESCRIPTION:One of the most important first steps a community can take in order to address sustainability is creating or growing a green team. A green team can be an informal working group or committee that just has internal representatives from the local government\, or it can be a group comprised of both government staff and external partners. A green team can also be a formal or codified group such as a commission or board.
