This new preserve is taking shape\, and we’re inviting volunteers to be part of the process from the very beginning. \nWe will be working on installing gates and signage\, clearing and preparing trails\, and establishing key visitor access areas. Volunteers will also help bring life to the landscape through exciting restoration projects\, including building a rain garden and planting prairie habitat. In addition\, we’ll be creating a designated parking area to welcome future visitors. \nJoin us in shaping Northcutt into a space the community can enjoy for years to come.

DESCRIPTION:Join Green Umbrella’s Greenspace Alliance and Anderson Township Staff for a Meet A Greenspace Hike exploring the Forestlake Drive to Eight Mile Road Greenway. \nThe hike is planned for 3:00 – 4:30\, Wednesday\, July 22nd.  \nWe will meet at the northern end of Forestlake Drive in Anderson Township (Address: 2253 Forestlake Dr.\, Cincinnati\, OH\, 45244). Please only park on the west side of Forestlake Drive and avoid parking in the cul-de-sac. \nThe hike will be a moderate to strenuous out-and-back 1.6-mile hike. There are no steep sections except for a stream crossing with a high bank. About 1\,000 feet of the hike will be in a creek bed with up to 8 inches of water\, depending on weather conditions*. Please dress appropriately\, bring water\, and snacks (if you need them). This will be an opportunity to learn about the Greenway\, Anderson Township’s Greenspace program\, and brainstorm about the future of this corridor! \n*Please note that much of this hike is a creek walk with slippery rocks and flowing water. Appropriate footwear is recommended\, and trekking poles may be beneficial for balance. DESCRIPTION:Registration Requirements: Preregistration required. \nRecommended Audience: This program is designed for adults. Children of any age are more than welcome with the understanding that it is an adult yoga class\, so children under 13 years of age may not be able to do everything or stay interested in the class. Adults will have to decide how much management of their children they are interested in doing. \nProgram Description: Connect to nature in a deeper way through the mindful movement and meditative practices found in yoga. During this on-the-trail experience\, participants might draw upon the stability of trees for balancing postures or extend into a turtle pose by the pond. Become part of nature by meditating in a creek\, hugging trees\, and breathing in the life force around you. All levels are welcome. \nAbout the Guides: Diane H. Schmidt uses her years of experience as a certified Kripalu Yoga instructor to guide others through a gentle yoga experience that brings in elements of nature. As the founder of the first Cincinnati yoga studio\, Cincinnati Yoga School and Bookstore\, Diane has led many yoga classes and developed her style that focuses on the gentle stretches and mindful movement to help soothe stress. \nAmber Tucker has been volunteering for several years and has used yoga to heal from a medical setback. In 2024\, she began her Yoga Teacher Training\, inspired to share this path with others. Nature is her sanctuary\, and she looks forward to guiding others in discovering harmony between movement\, breath\, and the natural world. \nWhat to Expect: No prior yoga experience is necessary to enjoy this class. The instructor’s goal is to make yoga accessible for everyone using props and variations\, as needed. Trails and distances will vary between classes\, and we may encounter steps. Intensity is easy to moderate. \nThis program is entirely outdoors.\nRestrooms are available only at the start and end of the program\, as we will be out on the trails during the program.\nProgram runs rain or shine.\nWhat to Bring: Guests should bring water if the day is hot\, and a hiking stick if you have one for fun poses. DESCRIPTION:Registration Requirements: Preregistration required. \nIntended Audience: This family-friendly program is designed for adults and/or families with children 8 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nProgram Description: Whether you’re a foodie\, a forager\, or are looking for something fun to do\, you’ll savor the season as you learn by doing. Head out to harvest in community\, then swap your haul for some pre-made ice cream. \nEach outing includes: \nForaging basics and tips on ethical harvesting\nProcessing tips and recipes\nAn experience highlighting natural and human history…through the lens of ice cream.\nAn overview of how we “wild tend” crops as we care for the land\nA sample of a bonus foraged food based on what’s in season (and what we’re working on) \nWhat to Expect: This is a hands-on class with an optional gathering in the field portion. We’ll be headed out onto the land and off trail to harvest. Remember that raspberry canes and\, in particular\, blackberry canes are very thorny. With care\, you’ll emerge unscathed. Loaner harvesting baskets (the sort that attach to your waist to allow you to pick with both hands) and/or tools will be available. \nThis program is mostly outdoors with indoor options available in the case of severe weather.\nRestrooms are available at the start and end of the program. Restrooms are not available on the trails.\nTrails/areas used during this program are rated as moderate (some elevation changes; trails may be uneven or could be slippery when wet) and off-trail for a planned distance of 0.5-1 mile at a moderate pace.\nProgram runs rain or shine. \nWhat to Wear: As we’re harvesting from thorny wild berry canes or digging for roots\, long pants\, boots\, and even a sturdy long-sleeved shirt are recommended. Pro-tip: consider wearing a clean glove on your non-dominant hand (to hold berry canes)\, picking with your dominant hand. Treating your body/clothing for chiggers is recommended. \nWhere to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. Step into the forest after dark and experience the diversity that emerges once the sun goes down. \nJoin Jessee Smith and Sarah Kent at the Kirby Nature Center as we set up blacklight stations to attract moths and other nighttime insects. As they gather on illuminated sheets\, you will have the opportunity to observe them up close and learn about their role in local ecosystems. Participants are encouraged to bring a red light or UV flashlight (we have extras). \nSpace is limited and this program typically fills quickly\, so please RSVP to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Plant Sale Walkthrough: Edible Native Plants at Long Branch Farm & Trails
DESCRIPTION:Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults and interested youth ages 12 and up\, when accompanied by an adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nProgram Description: We garden with native plants to benefit wildlife and to beautify our landscape\, but those same plants can also nourish us. We’ll walk through the plant sale looking through the lens of edible and useful species\, cover harvest and processing particulars\, touch on culinary applications\, and try some food samples. \nAbout the Program Guide: A 30+ year veteran of Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC)\, Jason Neumann currently serves as public programs manager\, crafting experiences that immerse visitors in nature and leading interpretive trainings. He works towards translating CNC’s “plant native” initiative into visitor engagement opportunities and has a special interest in connecting people to nature through food. Growing up on a small farm sparked his deep interest in agriculture\, which was fanned to flame through a BS degree in Crop and Soil Sciences (Michigan State University)\, and later a graduate certificate in Agroforestry (University of Missouri – Columbia). Drawing from the perspective of a farmer/naturalist\, he seeks to work with nature\, whether in his suburban backyard operation called Someday Farm\, the CNC Edible Plants and Foraging Group (founded in 2013)\, or managing the native perennial polyculture plots and native 2-acre pawpaw grove at Long Branch Farm & Trails. \nWhat to Expect: We’ll stay in close proximity to the Creekside barn\, venturing into a nearby native edibles plot to harvest elderflowers. \nTrails/areas used during this program are rated as accessible (packed gravel trails\, mild hills) for a planned distance of 0-0.25 mile at a slow pace.\nProgram runs rain or shine.\nRestrooms are available throughout the program.\nWhere to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. DESCRIPTION:RAPTOR Inc’s facilities are open to the public during our Open House Events and by appointment only. On the last Sunday of each month (March-November) from 1pm to 4pm our highly skilled educators will be available to welcome guests\, lead tours\, conduct educational programs with our avian ambassadors\, share biological artifacts\, and answer questions. You will have the opportunity to visit various educational stations where you can see and learn about the birds of prey native to our area and the work that RAPTOR Inc. does to protect these magnificent creatures. The Open Houses are FUN and FREE\, but DONATIONS are greatly appreciated! (Private tours and educational programs can still be scheduled at other times by appointment for a fee.)
