SUMMARY:Full Moon Walk: Fool's Moon at Long Branch Farm and Trails
DESCRIPTION:Recommended Audience: This program is designed for adults and children 12+. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nProgram Description: Witness the night’s magic transform the trails as we marvel at the full moon and reveal natural history happenings on this quiet\, guided hike. Full Moon Walks provide rare opportunities to hike Cincinnati Nature Center trails when we’re normally closed. \nWhile each Full Moon Walk varies\, we generally stop periodically for natural history moments\, special readings\, or simply to admire the shadows cast by the full moon. As it’s nighttime\, the pace is slower. Leaders adjust the walking speed based on their group. \nWhat to Expect: On a Full Moon Walk\, you’ll take a 1-to-1.5-mile leisurely walk on a trail. \nWe avoid steps and stream crossings for safety.\nThe trails may be muddy during wetter times of the year\, but we’ll do our best to keep you dry.\nFor more information\, please see how to prepare for a night hike.\nNote: Please arrive promptly for the walk’s start time. Gatehouse only remains open for 15 minutes after program start time. \nWhere to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. (6926 Gaynor Rd\, Goshen\, OH 45122) \nPricing: Ticket fees include daily admission.

SUMMARY:Grow and Use Elderberry Bushes at Long Branch Farm and Trails
DESCRIPTION:Registration Requirements: Preregistration required. \nRecommended Audience: This program is designed for adults. \nProgram Description: Humans have used elder for thousands of years. Elderberries have been found in Egyptian tombs\, folk tales point to centuries of use in Europe\, and the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates called elder the “medicine chest of the people\,” believing he could heal any part of the body with the plant. \nModern scientific methods have revealed elder’s unique combination of antioxidants\, including antiviral compounds. Not only are elderberries a “superfruit\,” but our native American elder (Sambucus canadensis) is small enough to grow in a suburban yard\, and it benefits pollinators and birds. \nDuring this in-the-field class\, we’ll draw upon the natural history of this native shrub as we look for advice on how to propagate\, grow\, and prune elder bushes\, contend with birds while you wait for your elderberries to ripen\, and harvest fruit. We’ll touch on a range of culinary uses for the flowers (fresh\, dried\, frozen) and fruits (fresh\, juiced\, dried\, or frozen) and provide a few samples. This class includes a start for a new elderberry bush. \nAbout the Instructor: A 25+ year veteran of Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC)\, Jason Neumann currently serves as public programs manager\, crafting experiences that immerse visitors in nature and leading interpretive trainings. He works towards translating CNC’s “plant native” initiative into visitor engagement opportunities and has a special interest in connecting people to nature through food. Growing up on a small farm sparked his deep interest in agriculture\, which was fanned to flame through a BS degree in Crop and Soil Sciences (Michigan State University)\, and later a graduate certificate in Agroforestry (University of Missouri – Columbia). Drawing from the perspective of a farmer/naturalist\, he seeks to work with nature\, whether in his suburban backyard operation called Someday Farm\, the CNC Edible Plants and Foraging Group (founded in 2013)\, or managing the native perennial polyculture plots and native 2-acre pawpaw grove at Long Branch Farm & Trails. Jason is on the board of the Ohio Pawpaw Growers Association. \nWhat to Expect: Trails/areas used during this program are rated as level terrain for a planned distance of less than half a mile at a moderate pace. \nRestrooms are available at the start and end of the program. Restrooms are not available on the trails.\nThis program is entirely outdoors.\nProgram runs rain or shine.\nWhat to Wear: Dress for the weather and to be outdoors the entire time. \nWhere to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. (6926 Gaynor Rd\, Goshen\, OH 45122) \nCost: Ticket fees include daily admission.

SUMMARY:Chasing Waterfalls: A Backpacking Trip for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to confidently backpack in the outdoors! This trip is geared towards people with little to no backpacking experience. Please only sign up if you are new(ish) to backpacking or haven’t been in a long time and could use a refresh. \nIn this trip\, we’ll hike with all our gear no more than 5 miles per day on relatively flat trails\, coming across waterfalls\, rock shelters and a natural arch. Several experienced backpackers will be on hand to share backpacking tips\, so it’s a great beginner experience. \nWe will explore the Yahoo Falls area in the Big South Fork\, completing a counterclockwise loop along the Sheltowee Trace and Negro Creek trails. We’ll start at the Yahoo Falls trailhead and hike 5 miles on the first day\, then set up basecamp. On the second day\, we’ll dayhike to Princess falls\, about 4 miles roundtrip. We hike 5 miles on Negro Creek on the last day and head back to our cars. This is a beautiful hike with waterfalls and caves. \nWe’ll meet at Meijer in Florence and decide on carpooling. At Whitley City\, we’ll have a quick lunch (buy or bring your own) and will do the same on our drive back home. \nPlease reach out with any questions if you have not backpacked before\, if you’re not sure what to bring\, or are in need of gear. There are resources available to borrow some gear. \nNo dogs. You must register on Meetup to participate. All participants will need to sign a liability waiver. It’s also suggested you carry a completed medical form in case of emergency.
