Ohio has seen an exponential increase in the number of households experiencing economic hardship due to the effects of COVID-19. These hardships have caused many Ohioans to choose between basic necessities like food or to go without. Thanks to a great partnership with Buckeye Health Plan, Ohio’s most vulnerable populations are becoming aware of healthy food and resources available in their backyard.
Buckeye is partnering with Produce Perks Midwest for a healthy food incentive program, called Buckeye Fresh!. Buckeye invites their members and the community to Buckeye Fresh! days at farmers markets in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo.
Buckeye members attending the market on Buckeye Fresh! days will get $10 worth of vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, and children of members will receive a free Buckeye Buck to purchase a healthy snack, too. Healthy eating is extended to all market goers through educational activities, giveaways and recipes.
Market goers will be educated on two Produce Perks programs that supply additional financial resources to purchase healthy food. SNAP/EBT shoppers will receive a $1-for-$1 match at the market via the Produce Perks program. Families can receive an additional $40 to purchase healthy food if they meet eligibility requirements.
The Buckeye Fresh! program extends our work to reach low-income families by providing an additional financial incentive to visit the market. The hope is that Buckeye members will gain a deeper understanding of the resources available to purchase fresh produce and continue to visit the market to provide for their families.
We are excited to partner with Buckeye on this exciting initiative and encourage you to visit the farmers market on Buckeye Fresh! days.
