Eat Healthy NKY: Linking Schools to Local Produce

The Eat Healthy NKY 2nd quarterly meeting is a follow up to the June meeting on farm-to-school. Receive additional assistance from local experts on how to have an active farm-to-school program in the cafeteria, classroom and community and network with others!

Target Audience*: school garden coordinators, food service directors, local farms and producers, teachers (STEM, PE/Health & others), FRYSC’s, curriculum administrators, school wellness policy team members, parents and any others interested.

  • Roger Kipp, Food Service Director, Norwood City School District, OH — Learn about the many ways this local school district’s Food and Nutrition Services team is leading the way in farm-to-school efforts and about their mission to “Serve, Nourish, Educate”.
  • Nicole Barber-Culp, Coordinated School Health Administrator, Division of Maternal and Child Health — Learn how to provide wellness policy support for farm-to-school initiatives.
  • Elaine Russell, KY Department for Public Health — Learn the funding options available to support farm-to-school efforts and key components to include in grant applications.
  • Vicki Dansberry, NKY Cooperative for Educational Services — Local grant writing services
  • Melinda Turner, Fuel Up to Play 60 — Assistance with funding available for this program.

Breakout sessions:

  • Procurement — Specifically for food service directors and local farmers / producers to meet and receive support from Tina Garland, KY Farm to School Coordinator, Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Our Harvest Cooperative and KHI Foods will also be sharing what they can provide for schools. This session is to better understand the procurement process for schools and to plan for school menu needs and the farmer’s planting season.
  • On the ground implementation of school gardens — County Extension Agents, 4-H and horticulture/agriculture, from Campbell, Boone, Kenton and Grant counties will meet with attendees from their respective county to showcase their services and curricula available.
