Produce Perks empowers low-income individuals receiving federal food assistance to purchase healthy fruits and vegetables from Ohio farmers by providing a $1-for-$1 match when shopping at farmers' markets or select grocery stores.

Produce Perks Midwest is seeking a volunteer to help support and grow our social media presence. The ideal volunteer would be a creative individual who is excited about social media and all things local food and healthy eating. We are looking for someone who can be our feet on the ground at area farmers’ markets — collecting photos, video, quotes, and other content that can help us tell the Produce Perks story.

If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact Barbie Varbo at barbie@produceperks.org or 513-769-7375.

Organization: UC Sustainability & Keep Cincinnati Beautiful

    When: Saturday July 27th – Sunday August 4th, 10am – 6pm everyday

Where: Block 1, across from Crossroads, 42 Calhoun St.

Moving at the end of July? We are providing a way to get rid of things you don’t need without sending them to the landfill.

Moving out can generate an excessive amount of waste. In Uptown, most leases end around July 31st, so students and families are cleaning out to move during that week. In the past, this has caused a lot of furniture, trash, and other items to be on the street or overflowing in dumpsters. In order to try to prevent this from happening, and to try to divert waste from the landfill, UC|Sustainability, Cincinnati Recycles, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, Clifton Heights, and  City Of Cincinnati are offering extra trash dumpsters, recycling containers, and will be working with Simple Recycling to help divert the waste!

There is also an opportunity to volunteer and get service hours at this event. To sign up and for more information here.

    Organization: Civic Garden Center

    Date: July 20th, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Many of Cincinnati’s green spaces are overrun with invasive plants. As more and more ash trees come down, thinning our tree canopy, there is increasingly more room for invasive species (Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese knotweed, Garlic Mustard) to take over and exclude our native plants and animals. Therefore, rather than having our Christmas Tree Sale, we are kicking off this reforestation project to save and protect Cincinnati’s green spaces. We will begin by having a series of invasive removal workdays this fall and next spring. We will then begin planting native trees in the fall of 2019.

The first space we’re focusing on is Walnut Woods, a 10-acre property adjacent to Walnut Hills High School. We will be restoring it in collaboration with Walnut Hills High School, Cincinnati Parks, UC, the Evanston Community and more. This will be an ongoing project, and we could use your help!

Location: Walnut Woods, located adjacent to Walnut Hills High School (3250 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45207)

Parking: Park on Sulsar Street, and you'll see the group gathered in front of the woods. The organizer, Susan, will have you sign in there. She'll also have water & some snacks!

    About Treeforestation:

Trees matter. A lot. With our forests facing unprecedented risks from disease, invasive species, and human development, trees – the biggest plants on the planet – are increasingly vital. That’s why CGC is so excited to play its part in the global movement to restore our urban forests and expand our useable urban greenspace through its new Treeforestation initiative.

During Phase One of the project, we’ll be working to clean up and plant trees on a portion of a 9-acre site near Walnut Hills High School. Joining us in this project are the students, teachers and parents at Walnut Hills as well as Cincinnati Parks. We’re also scheduling workdays with our own volunteers and corporate groups.
