Walnut Hills High School (WHHS) Environmental Science Mentorship Program
What is this? A third-semester science project designed to expose students to environmental issues while encouraging environmental stewardship. Students are divided into groups to explore an environmental topic that includes: ENERGY, WATER, LAND, and FOOD. Mentors are NOT environmental experts; but resources to share their expertise and guidance on group dynamics, research gathering and presentation skills.
What is the Time Commitment?
1 hour per week/6 weeks
Fridays 7:30-8:20am (1st Bell) OR 8:20-9:15am (2nd Bell)
on January 11th, 18th, 25th, February 1st, 8th, and 15th
What does it entail? 4 classroom project sessions, 1 dress rehearsal and 1 presentation day (1 hour/week). Meet with your student group during the bell of your choice. Work with the students to develop a 5-minute presentation with a solution to a local environmental issue. On the presentation day, the groups will be judged by a collection of corporate, environmental and school officials. We understand mentors may not be able to make every project session and that’s okay.
Why Participate? This is a great way for a corporate group to make a difference with this unique volunteer opportunity. Teens are fun to work with and truly appreciate your support and expertise!
A Mentor testimonial from 2017:
"The project inherently has so many benefits: exposure to mentors, research on relevant topics, and opportunities to communicate visually and verbally complex ideas. I hope it will continue." -Ryan Geismar from Human Nature
“I’ve been a mentor for two years now. My favorite part is offering my expertise in group dynamics and connection building to springboard them into the corporate world. I still keep in touch with one of my mentees.” – Michelle Zulli from On Line Design, Inc.
