Position Summary:

Support the execution of Kroger’s sustainability strategy to improve the company’s performance as a responsible and sustainable business and meet our long-term commitments. Play a key role in achieving, measuring and reporting progress against established company-wide sustainability goals. Lead projects to advance sustainability initiatives and improvements. Interact with associates, customers and other key stakeholders as needed. Demonstrate the company’s core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion and safety.

Essential Functions:

  • Support the implementation of a comprehensive sustainability strategy to improve business results and performance on key environmental issues and commitments
  • Help advance progress on Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan
  • Contribute to the company’s reporting efforts related to corporate social responsibility, including the annual sustainability report and investor questionnaires and assessments
  • Work with internal subject matter experts to synthesize and assess data and trends, and track the company’s progress toward sustainability goals for 2020 and beyond
  • Evaluate and measure the effectiveness of corporate sustainability strategies, programs and tactics
  • Lead projects in collaboration with internal and external business partners to advance sustainability at Kroger
  • Support engagement with key stakeholders to advance conversation on company sustainability, including participating on relevant multi-stakeholder groups and taskforces
  • Partner with Corporate Affairs and Marketing teams to create/implement communication plans that improve associate engagement on sustainability initiatives and enhance the company’s reputation
  • Work with external national/local partners and community organizations to increase our understanding of sustainability issues/opportunities
  • Manage vendor and third-party relationships
  • Travel to divisions and conferences, and conduct business trips to support sustainability efforts

Minimum Position Qualifications/Education:

  • 5+ years of experience in sustainability, corporate social responsibility AND/OR other relevant corporate roles
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Knowledge of relevant sustainability performance metrics (e.g., energy and carbon accounting, waste and recycling diversion)
  • Exposure to sustainability measurement and reporting frameworks (e.g., CDP, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, GRI, EPA WasteWise) 
  • Demonstrated technical and quantitative skills including experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Proven project management and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working across different company departments, with people with different skill sets, and with individuals at all levels of an organization
  • Ability to handle sensitive information while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality

Desired Previous Job Experience/Education:

  • 7+ years of experience in sustainability role and/or relevant corporate roles
  • Master’s degree in relevant field
