About this position:

Brief Description: The City of Cincinnati seeks to contract with a professional, graphic designer or design firm to lead the design of a cohesive, accessible, and convincing 2023 Green Cincinnati Plan (GCP).

Timeframe: November 2022 through April 2023

Hours Expected: Up to 175 hours

Hourly Wage Range: Negotiable depending on experience

Location: Preferably based in Cincinnati, Ohio, but location is flexible

Report to: OES Director

Deliverables:

  • Comprehensive design plan for the 2023 Green Cincinnati Plan (approx. 100 pages in length)
  • Executive Summary of the GCP
  • 1-2 page high-level overview (English & Spanish versions)

Contractor Responsibilities:

  • Work with OES Director, OES staff, and contracted technical writer to create high-quality, impactful publications and communication materials in alignment with branding and written voice.
  • Familiarize with 2018 GCP and top plans from other municipalities.
  • Determine preferred design approach for review and approval by OES Director and in concert with the technical writer.
  • Work with OES Director and Equity Committee Leadership to determine best means of integrating an equity lens (language, image and graphics, etc.) graphically throughout.
  • Provide initial draft design for review and approval by OES Director and staff by November 30, 2022. 
  • Coordinate design of one/two pager into Spanish and design any additional language translations that are recommended.
  • Marry GCP Appendix content with the overall document design.
  • Provide minor adjustment as directed by City Council.
  • Work with OES staff to determine the numbers of printed materials required of each deliverable.
  • Coordinate with selected printer to provide print-ready document by March 15, 2023.
  • Prepare and provide files for online versions of all deliverables.

Key competencies/Requirements:

  • Proven graphics design experience in a comparable role for at least 3-5 years.
  • Ability to grasp complex, technical topics and make them understandable to a varied audience through clean and concise design.
  • Clear capacity to work collaboratively across various types of professionals and skill sets to reach a common goal.
  • Expert command of the English (American) language at native-speaking level.
  • Meticulous eye for detail / accuracy and a commitment to the highest standards of quality.
  • Strong project management skills with proven experience and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills and a cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Expert use of and access to design software (Adobe InDesign and Illustrator), MS Office and Google Drive.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and ability to create visually-pleasing and easily understandable maps from GIS data. 

To be provided by The City of Cincinnati and Green Umbrella to contractor:

  • Copy & content for deliverables listed above, delivered in Google Documents
  • Brand assets & guidelines for the City of Cincinnati, including logo lockups and fonts
  • Any required, pre-existing graphics or images to be included in deliverables
  • Spanish translation copy and any additional language translations that are recommended.
